Canada: New Brunswick Oil, Gas Blueprint to Be ... - LNG World News

Oil, Gas Blueprint to Be Released by Spring of 2013

The provincial government will develop an oil and gas blueprint to be released in the spring of 2013, Energy and Mines Minister of New Brunswick Craig Leonard announced.

The blueprint will look at the current and future framework required for the oil and gas industry in the province. It will also take into account the fact that natural gas currently provided to New Brunswick from offshore sources in Nova Scotia will eventually run dry, and it will consider what that could mean to the province?s security of supply, as well as to natural gas prices in the future.

?Natural gas extraction from shale formations has transformed the energy marketplace around the world,? said Leonard. ?New Brunswick has the potential to take part in that transformation through its own natural gas reserves. We are investigating the opportunity but we will only permit the expansion of the natural gas industry in New Brunswick if we are convinced it can be done in an environmentally-responsible manner.?

Leonard noted that natural gas, while not a renewable fuel, could play a significant role in the future in helping to diversify the province?s energy needs. For example, using cleaner natural gas to fuel power plants currently running on oil which comes from markets overseas. This is an area that will be more closely examined in the blueprint.

?Natural gas will play a significant role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions today and into the foreseeable future as it displaces oil and coal as energy sources in our region and provides efficient back-up to renewable sources such as wind and solar power,? he said.

The blueprint will focus on five key objectives identified as priorities by the public during the past 18 months in various reports and discussion documents, public engagement and town hall meetings:

  • environmental responsibility;
  • effective regulation and enforcement;
  • community engagement;
  • stability of supply; and
  • sustainable economic development.

Building on those five objectives, the action plan will address recommendations outlined in the reports authored by Louis LaPierre and Dr. Eilish Cleary including: standards for water usage and well construction; monitoring standards for natural gas development sites; and a human resource plan to assure proper inspection and environmental oversight on all projects, at all stages.

Further, the provincial government will examine the idea of establishing regulatory bodies such as an oil and gas commission and an oil and gas secretariat.

The provincial government will address the royalty regime and the regulatory model early in 2013 to provide clarity to the public and stakeholders before activities resume on an incremental approach in the spring.

The regulatory framework will consist of a combination of legislation, regulation and policy administered primarily by the Department of Energy and Mines and the Department of Environment and Local Government. This will follow the work undertaken during the past 18 months from which a series of recommendations were put forward for public feedback.

Existing legislation such as the Oil and Natural Gas Act and the Clean Environment Act have the necessary authorities and mechanisms to administer and enforce the bulk of these requirements. Adjustments to legislation will be made as necessary to ensure complete oversight of industry standards.

Any proposed operational or technical requirements which fall outside of the jurisdiction of these two departments will be managed through the department responsible for the area in question.

?We expect that the final technical review and establishment of the regulatory framework will be completed by the end of the year and that all activity taking place in 2013 will be required to adhere to the new rules,? Leonard said.

The provincial government will continue to identify and act upon any possibilities that arise for greater research and scientific work to be done in the province in relation to oil and natural gas activities.

?The Department of Energy and Mines will be initiating discussions with New Brunswick universities to determine the best manner in which we can move forward with the establishment of an energy institute ? an independent body that would ensure credible research and monitoring in support of natural gas exploration and production, as recommended by Louis Lapierre,? said Leonard. ?The government strongly believes that academia must play a key role in developing our own knowledge base for natural gas right here at home.?

FDA approves clinical use of cabozantinib (but not for prostate ...

Posted on by Sitemaster

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has approved cabozantinib (brand name Cometriq?) for treatment of progressive, metastatic medullary thyroid cancer in the USA.

The media release announcing the approval of cabozantinib for this clinical use is available on the Exelixis web site.

As at least some readers will be aware, cabozantinib is also in development for the treatment of metastatic, castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC). Thus, the approval of cabozantinib in metastatic medullary thyroid cancer does make this drug potentially available for use off label in the treatment of men with mCRPC.

It should be noted immediately that use of cabozantinib in its approved indication is clearly associated with a number of potentially very serious side effects, including:

  • Serious and sometimes fatal gastrointestinal perforations and fistulas
  • Severe and sometimes fatal hemorrhage
  • Increased risk for thrombotic events, such as heart attacks.
  • Wound complications

Whether US insurance companies or Medicare will be willing to cover the costs of the use of cabozantinib for the treatment of mCRPC off label is not a question to which we have any answer at this time, and the best way to get access to cabozantinib at this time may still be to enroll in one of the ongoing clinical trials of this drug in the treatment of late stage prostate cancer. However, the approval of this drug in a non-prostate cancer indication is another good signal for the possible future approval of this drug in very late stage prostate cancer too.

For our European readers, it is worth noting that Exelixis was also able to announce that the European Medicines Agency (EMEA) has accepted the Marketing Authorization Application (MAA) for cabozantinib for review for the treatment of progressive, unresectable, locally advanced, or metastatic medullary thyroid cancer. It is therefore possible that cabozantinib will also become available in Europe in the not to distant future (albeit not approved for the treatment of late stage prostate cancer).

US budget deal hopes give markets a boost

LONDON (AP) ? Hopes that U.S. political leaders may be inching towards a budget deal that will avoid automatic spending cuts and tax increases have given markets a big boost Thursday.

Comments by President Barack Obama and Speaker of the House John Boehner that a deal to avoid a budget crisis could be reached before the year-end helped U.S. markets turn around on Wednesday and that momentum carried through into the Asian and European sessions.

Getting a deal done before the year-end is necessary to avoid the so-called "fiscal cliff" of automatic spending cuts and tax increases that many economists think could push the U.S. economy, the world's largest, back into recession.

"Any comments like this between now and then end of the year are likely to provide a boost, irrelevant of whether they are realistic or not," said Craig Erlam, market analyst at Alpari.

In Europe, the FTSE 100 index of leading British shares was up 0.9 percent at 5,856 while Germany's DAX rose 0.7 percent to 7,397. The CAC-40 in France was 1.1 percent higher at 3,555.

Wall Street was poised for a solid opening too, with both Dow futures and the S&P 500 futures up 0.6 percent.

Whether the momentum will continue over the coming days could be dependent on how the negotiations go. Past experience suggests that the discussions may go down to the wire.

"As actions speak louder than words, the risk of sudden sharp corrections will remain as this no doubt drags on towards the New Year," said Mike McCudden, head of derivatives at Interactive Investor.

The focus of attention will likely remain on the U.S., especially now that Greece's euro partners and the International Monetary Fund have agreed to carry on funding the near-bankrupt country. With an imminent default of Greece off the table, investor worries over Europe have diminished this week.

That's helped shore up the euro, which is heading back towards the $1.30 mark. It's up a further 0.3 percent to $1.2987.

Earlier, Japan's Nikkei 225 index rose 1 percent to close at 9,400.88. Hong Kong's Hang Seng jumped 1 percent to 21,922.89 and South Korea's Kospi added 1.2 percent to 1,934.85.

But mainland Chinese stocks extended their slump to a fourth day. The Shanghai Composite Index lost 0.5 percent to 1,963.49, the lowest closing since Jan. 16, 2009. The smaller Shenzhen Composite Index lost 1 percent 743.43.

Oil prices tracked equities higher, with the benchmark New York rate up 62 cents to $87.11 a barrel.

Google's Ingress is a gold mine for augmented reality

The new game sees players do battle via smartphones as they roam their city?? but it's paving the way for something even more interesting

THERE'S a battle raging on Massachusetts Avenue. I'm hopelessly outnumbered, trying to take control of a patch of land at the edge of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. My fighter name is Spottiswoode. I try to seize control of the enemy portal, but get knocked back, losing health. They're too strong here.

This isn't real life. Well, not quite. I'm playing a game called Ingress, which sees players fighting for control of real-world landmarks or monuments - dubbed portals - in their cities. It was released as a mysterious, invite-only beta two weeks ago by a Google spin-off called Niantic Labs. It represents a big step towards ubiquitous, accurate augmented reality (AR), in which real-world objects are annotated with a virtual layer of information that is displayed on a smartphone's camera.

Ingress runs as an Android app, tied to the real world through GPS. You and your smartphone need to be within range of a portal to interact with it. "Exotic matter" (XM) is collected as you explore your town and allows you to take control of a portal. You can then link it with two other portals to create a triangle. Your side now "owns" that territory.

Right now, the area around MIT and Harvard University is a sea of green, the colour of the "Enlightened", with small pockets of blue-coloured "Resistance" up towards Medford and to the south near the Boston Red Sox's stadium. This mix of physical and virtual reality, using accurate location data to tie them together, places Ingress somewhere between a map and full-blown AR.

But it feels like more than just a fun new game. There are rumours that Google's much-hyped AR goggles, dubbed Project Glass, may launch in 2013. Vital to its success will be detailed info overlaid on what wearers see as they walk around outside. Even if the goggles don't emerge next year, a detailed record of where all the Ingress players wander - and the establishments they visit en route - is still a data gold mine for Google to use to improve its location-based services.

Players in less well-covered areas can also suggest that landmarks of interest to them should become new game portals by snapping a geotagged photo with their smartphone.

"This is classic Google," says Blair MacIntyre, director of the Augmented Environments Lab at Georgia Tech, Atlanta. "They may get information about new monuments, and that actually helps them generate more interesting search results, because these are the things that local people say are interesting."

Such photos will show buildings from many angles and could be used to create models that would help computer-vision systems recognise them later. This would help solve a major issue with current AR apps. "Accuracy is one of the biggest problems for AR," says Tobias H?llerer at the University of California, Santa Barbara. "The element missing in commercial products is computer vision."

So while Ingress isn't AR in its own right, its features pave the way for it. "It clearly has AR in mind," says H?llerer. "The data will be immensely valuable."

As I cycle home from work, I stop near a location I'd scouted out previously, one with a weak enemy portal. I attack, using built-up XM to destroy the enemy infrastructure before planting my own, surrounding the portal and turning it blue. On Ingress's built-in chat client, a player called Igashu praises my handiwork. "Good job, Spottiswoode," he says. I feel proud and move on, plotting my next assault upon the enemy's portals.

Virtual guide points out the sights

You can't beat having a local show you around their city, one who knows exactly where you are and points out fascinating details about your surroundings. Now a new smartphone app from Google called Field Trip aims to do just that. The app, only available on Android phones in the US for now, uses Wi-Fi or GPS to place you, then feeds you relevant information about your location, alerting you to interesting places as you pass near them.

The user decides how much or how little info they want, and alerts range from historical facts about buildings to reviews of restaurants and local money-off deals. For those behind the wheel, a driving mode announces details aloud.

Gender pay gap is eroding, especially among younger women, US data show

Women are slowly making inroads in the gender pay gap. Recent Bureau of Labor Statistics data for full-time workers show women earn 82 percent as much as men, up from 64 percent in 1980.

Women are, slowly, making inroads in the gender pay gap ? an issue that got some attention in the presidential campaign this fall, as President Obama touted his signing of the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, and both candidates answered a question on the topic in the town hall debate.

According to the latest numbers released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) last week, based on the weekly earnings of full-time wage and salary workers, women now earn 82 percent as much as men ? up from 64 percent in 1980.

In recent discussions of the wage gap, a different figure ? 77 percent ? has been widely cited. That figure it also accurate, but the measure, which comes out in the spring, looks at median annual earnings for full-time year-round workers; it includes self-employed workers, which the weekly numbers exclude, and excludes seasonal workers. The figures are based on the same raw BLS data.

Most notably, in the BLS numbers released the day after Thanksgiving, the earnings of women between the ages of 25 and 34 have shot up fairly substantially over the past 32 years, from 69 percent of men's earnings in 1980 to 92 percent in 2011.

The gap still widens, though, as women age ? a sign that while many young women enter the workforce on a more equal playing field with their male counterparts, they still tend to fall behind on income as they age.

"A tremendous amount of progress has been made [on the earnings gap between men and women], in many ways more than I thought would be made," says Heidi Hartmann, president of the Institute for Women's Policy Research in Washington. The wage gap, she notes, has been cut nearly in half. "It's not good enough, but it's progress," Ms. Hartmann says.

And progress has also been made on the sex segregation of the labor market, with many previously male-dominated fields ? including law, banking, medicine, and civil service jobs like bus drivers and mail carriers ? opening up to women.

Both those trends are largely the result of women's increased entry into higher education, where female graduates have outnumbered male graduates since the mid 1980s.?

But Hartmann and others also caution that there's still a tremendous amount of work to do before women have true equality in the workforce.

A recent study from Catalyst, a nonprofit New York-based organization that promotes women in the business world, found that women in the business world are offered fewer of the "hot jobs" ? those jobs with high visibility, central to an organization's mission, that tend to lead to promotions down the road.

The Catalyst survey of top MBA grads found that men led projects with budgets more than twice the size of women's, with teams that were more than three times as large, and that posed a higher risk to the company. Men also had roles with significantly more critical responsibility ? one reason, Catalyst suggests in its analysis, for the persistent gender gap at senior levels that exists in the business world.

Another major factor in continuing inequities is the lack of parental supports, says Hartmann.

The US is one of the only countries in the world, she notes, without any guaranteed paid maternity leave ? and the only industrialized nation (the others include Lesotho, Papua New Guinea, and Swaziland).

And without the subsidized childcare costs that many nations have, many mothers have to factor child-care costs in their decision whether to return to work, and often take a leave of absence ? which they're later often penalized for when they do return to work.

And in a labor market where about half of US workers get no paid sick time at all, women are still most often the ones to skip work ? and forgo pay ? to stay home with sick children or other family members.

Still, women are slowly chipping away at the wage gap. And while paid parental leave remains elusive for many US workers, women have won a number of legal gains in the past 35 years that have helped contribute ? most notably the Pregnancy Discrimination Act of 1978 and the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 (which requires most employers to provide unpaid, job-protected leave of up to 12 weeks for family or medical reasons).

Some smaller employers are exempt from even these basic protections, notes Hartmann, "but the fact that we have them is better than [nothing]."

Nexus 7 gets its turn at 4.2.1 -- it's pushing now or can be manually flashed

Nexus 7

Just as we saw this morning with the Nexus 4 and Nexus 10, the Nexus 7 is getting updated to Android 4.2.1 via an OTA update. There's nothing groundbreaking here, its simply a bug fix for the omission of December from the people application and an update to add joysticks and gamepads as HID devices.

But updates are updates, and we know that plenty need to get them ASAP. Thanks to XDA, the manual download link is available and advanced users can flash at will. You'll end up with build number JOP40D, and everyone you know that was born in December is now allowed to get a year older again. Grab the OTA package below, and head into the forums for questions about flashing.

Chimp comedy brings the blues

Costumed chimps used to make me grin ear to ear when I saw them on TV. Now I realize there?s little that separates that delight from coveting a Chinese potion made from rhino tusks. It is sad to lose this pleasure, but somehow I?ll manage.

After a visit to Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary in Sierra Leone, I knew my days of snickering at chimps imitating actors were over. As it turns out, many other non-Africans have delighted in chimps before me. Since 1950, the small West African country exported more than 2,000 live chimps to the US, Japan, and Europe for the entertainment industry and for biomedical research. A law restricting such exports was passed in the eighties, but chimps continued to be owned within Sierra Leone, typically by tourists and expatriates including Peace Corps volunteers [reference 1]. A young chimp sells for US$61 on average, which is a pretty price in a country where most people survive on less than $1 per day.

Young chimps are super cute! But as they age, the jungle within appears. They flip tables, tear down drapes, and occasionally attack. A grown chimp is far stronger than a grown man, and it bears fiercer teeth. (Remember when Travis the chimp, a former star in Coca Cola and Old Navy commercials, mauled Charla Nash in California?) People tend to ditch their pet chimps once they?ve grown, but these human-raised creatures can no longer fend for themselves in the wild, and zoos often turn them away because they do not know how to integrate within chimp society.

Chimps at Tacugama from Amy Maxmen on Vimeo.

Thus, in 1995, an accountant in Sierra Leone, Bala Amarasekaran, established Tacugama Chimp Sanctuary to rehabilitate orphaned chimps, and to advocate against the chimpanzee pet trade. Some of the sanctuary?s chimps are donated by expatriates who no longer want their pets. Others are discovered within cages in abandoned houses, or chained by the road for sale. More recently, authorities confiscate illegally owned chimps because of a 2007 law prohibiting the capture, killing, or possession of chimps in Sierra Leone, and bring them to Tacugama.

A skinny Sierra Leonean man with a lazy eye and a warm demeanor named Moses Kappia led my tour of Tacugama Sanctuary. As we watched chimps howl and bounce through various rehabilitation enclosures, we talked about the history of the sanctuary.

When Kappia arrived at Tacugama 16 years ago, he watched it blossom with start-up donations from the European Union. Soon after, the sanctuary struggled to survive as civil war ripped through Sierra Leone. In 1997, rebels broke into the sanctuary and threatened to kill the chimpanzees for food, but Kappia and the few remaining staff convinced them to spare the animals. Instead, the rebels stole their belongings, their food, and the food and medicine intended for the chimps. The rebels returned again during that brutal, 11-year ?blood diamond? war, and again Kappia defended the chimps.

As the war wound down in 2002, Tacugama joined together with other African primate sanctuaries in the Pan African Sanctuary Alliance. They still struggle for funds, but manage to care for nearly 100 orphaned chimps that now frolic in their fenced-in slice of jungle.

Ali, my taxi driver, accompanied me on the tour. Inspired by Kappia, he vowed to report any chimps he discovered being sold or kept. And on the ride home, Ali said that he?d let any ?white people? in his taxi know that he could take them to see (not buy) the chimps ? just a 20 minute drive from the capital city of Freetown.

Back in the US, I?ve taken note of the Captive Primate Safety Act that has languished in Congress since 2007. It seeks to protect monkeys, chimps and other primates from the exotic pet trade in the US. The Humane Society suggests that people urge their legislators to support the act when it is reintroduced next year.

Kappia managed to convince rebels notorious for rape, amputations, and other crimes against humanity to leave the chimps alone. So when he asked me why our civil society continues to allow chimp pets and promotes chimps as entertainment despite the harm that then befalls our closest cousins, I felt lame answering, because we think it?s funny.

johir.khan: orpitasingh: Horse Racing History | recreation and sports ...

The sport of horse racing goes back a long, long way. It goes back to circa 4,500 BC when nomadic Central Asian tribes domesticated horses for the first time. Ever after, horse-racing has reigned supreme as a sport fit for Kings.

From the beginning of recorded history, horse racing has been depicted as an organised and popular sport common to all of the world's major civilizations. The Olympic Games of ancient Greece featured events involving both mounted and chariot racing. The sport was then taken up by the Romans. Mounted and chariot horse racing became major areas of enterprise in Roman Empire days; these events were the product of breeding programs with imported bloodlines and extensive training programs. Horseracing had all elements of legalized betting like bookies, proper racing tracks, hit tips, scandals and, red hot entertainment and excitement. Horse racing saw a decline that coincided with the Roman Empire's decline. It began to pick up speed once more once mankind was well into a more modern era.

Horse racing took a professional turn as long ago as the twelfth century, when English Crusader knights came back in the company of Arab horses. This set off a trend that lasted for the forthcoming period of hundreds of years: more and more Arab stallions were imported for crossing with English mares. The ensuing offspring were a real mix of speed and endurance. These cross bred horses were the forefathers of today's horse racing breeds.

As quantum technological jumps in transport and other fields of human concern took place in the 19th century and later , thousands of people became hooked on watching horse races and gambling on racing horses. Horseracing started to get intensive coverage in distinguished newspapers, and gambling volumes consistently increased. The arrival of organised on-site bookmakers brought along a complete sea change. Random and sometimes illegal, sometimes unethical practices led to a moderately successful Jockey Club effort to establish really high standards of order, discipline and integrity that ensured the sport's continued well being.

All around the world, attendance at race courses has been shooting up right into the early part of this century. There had been a decline in attendance during the 1970s and 1980s. The technology wonder of online web wagering has influenced horse racing in ways never conceived of earlier. Online betting has drawn a completely new generation of spectators and betters to the Game of Kings; they prefer to conduct all of their activities in front of their computers and TV sets. The facility to bet and earn cash legally from the result of horse races has been a core part of this sport's appeal and a major factor behind its survival as a sport with a presence.

Alleviate Arthritis Pain with Acupuncture | Truth N Health

Arthritis isn?t just one disease, but a complex disorder comprised of more than 100 distinct conditions that can affect people at any stage of life. Two of the most common forms are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. While these two forms of arthritis have very different causes, risk factors and effects on the body, they often share a common symptom ? persistent joint pain.

For many people, arthritis pain and inflammation cannot be avoided as the body ages. In fact, most people over the age of 50 show some signs of arthritis as joints naturally degenerate over time. Fortunately, arthritis can often be managed with acupuncture and Oriental medicine.
Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, affecting an estimated 21 million adults in the United States. Beginning with the breakdown of joint cartilage that results in pain and stiffness, osteoarthritis commonly affects the joints of the fingers, knees, hips and spine. Other joints affected less frequently include the wrists, elbows, shoulders and ankles. When osteoarthritis is found in a less frequently affected joint, there is usually a history of injury or unusual stress to that joint. Work-related repetitive injury and physical trauma may contribute to the development of osteoarthritis. If you have a strenuous job that requires repetitive bending, kneeling or squatting, for example, you may be at high risk for osteoarthritis of the knee.
?Rheumatoid arthritis can affect many different joints and, in some people, other parts of the body as well, including the blood, lungs and heart. With this form of arthritis, inflammation of the joint lining, called the synovium, can cause pain, stiffness, swelling, warmth and redness. The affected joint may also lose its shape, resulting in loss of normal movement.? Rheumatoid arthritis can last a long time and is a disease characterized by flares (active symptoms) and remissions (few to no symptoms).
?Diagnosis and Treatment of Arthritis with Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine
According to Oriental medical theory, arthritis arises when the cyclical flow of Qi (energy) in the meridians becomes blocked resulting in pain, soreness, numbness and stiffness.? This blockage is called ?bi syndrome? and is associated with ?bi? type pain.? It is widely studied and successfully treated using a combination of treatment modalities.? The acupuncture points and herbs that are used depend on whether the underlying cause of the blockage of Qi(arthritis) is caused by wind, cold, damp or damp-heat.
Acupuncture and Oriental medicine aim to treat the specific symptoms that are unique to each individual using a variety of techniques such as acupuncture, bodywork, lifestyle/dietary recommendations and energetic exercises to restore imbalances found in the body. Therefore, if 10 patients are treated with Oriental medicine for joint pain, each of these 10 patients will receive a unique, customized treatment with different acupuncture points, different herbs/supplements and different lifestyle and diet recommendations.
Your acupuncturist will examine you, take a look at the onset of your condition and learn your signs and symptoms to determine your diagnosis and choose the appropriate acupuncture points and treatment plan.

Reducing the Impact of Arthritis

The Arthritis Foundation recommends the following to reduce the impact of arthritis:
Get Active ? Regular physical activity helps build and maintain healthy bones, muscles and joints.? Tai Chi, a Chinese exercise that strengthens muscles, improves balance and flexibility, promotes relaxation, and has been shown to relieve chronic joint pain.
Control Weight ? Maintaining an appropriate weight or reducing weight to a recommended level reduces the risk of osteoarthritis.? Losing just 10 pounds relieves 40 pounds of pressure on knees.? For those living with symptoms, losing 15 pounds can cut knee pain in half.
Modify Job Tasks ? Try to modify your movements, since repeated use of joints in jobs that require bending and lifting is associated with an increased risk of developing osteoarthritis.
Speak with a health care professional about ways to reduce strain on your joints.

Anti-Inflammatory Foods

A balanced, varied diet can help ease the pain of arthritis by providing vitamins and minerals that keep your joints healthy. Avoiding ?damp? foods such as dairy products and greasy or spicy foods also helps joints.
Here are some healthy and delicious choices to include in your diet.
Ginger ? Ginger is a natural anti-inflammatory.? A fresh ginger tea can be made by combining a half teaspoon of grated ginger with 8 ounces of boiling water. Cover and steep for 10 to 15 minutes, strain and add honey to taste.
Fresh Pineapple ? Bromelain, an enzyme in pineapple, reduces inflammation. Be sure the pineapple is fresh, not canned or frozen.
Cherries ? Recent research has shown that tart cherries are an excellent source of nutrients that may help to reduce joint pain and inflammation related to arthritis.
Fish ? Cold-water fish such as salmon and mackerel contain omega-3 fatty acids, which help keep joints healthy as well as reduce pain and swelling.
Turmeric ? A natural anti-inflammatory, it can be used in many food preparations including soups, sauces and salad dressings.

Studies of Acupuncture for Arthritis

Several studies have shown that acupuncture can help people with arthritis and related auto-immune diseases.
Scientists found that acupuncture can reduce pain and improve mobility in arthritis patients by 40 percent based on results from a major clinical trial that investigated the ancient Chinese needle treatment.? A total of 570 patients aged 50 and older with osteoarthritis of the knee took part in the American study.? All had suffered significant pain in their knee the month before joining the trial, but had never experienced acupuncture.? By the eighth week, patients receiving genuine acupuncture treatments showed a significant increase in function compared with both the ?placebo? treatment and self-help groups. By week 14, they were also experiencing a significant decrease in pain.
In a German study, 3,500 people with osteoarthritis of the hip and/or knee received 15 sessions of acupuncture combined with their usual medical care.? The results showed that the patients that received acupuncture had less pain and stiffness, improved joint function and better quality of life than their counterparts who had routine care alone. The improvements occurred immediately after completing a three-month course of acupuncture and lasted for at least another three months, indicating osteoarthritis is among conditions effectively treated with acupuncture.
Another study, published in the journal Pain, looked at the effects of acupuncture among 40 adults with osteoarthritis of the knee.? Among the patients in the study, those who had a daily acupuncture session for 10 consecutive days reported greater improvement in their pain compared with patients who received a? ?placebo? version of the therapy.
In one Scandinavian study, 25 percent of arthritis patients who had been scheduled for knee surgery cancelled their operations after acupuncture treatment. In the study, researchers compared acupuncture with advice and exercise for the treatment of osteoarthritis of the hip. Thirty-two patients awaiting a total hip replacement were separated into two groups. One group received one 10-minute and five 25-minute sessions of acupuncture, and the other group received advice and hip exercises over a 6-week period. Patients were assessed for pain and functional ability: Patients in the acupuncture group showed significant improvements, while no significant changes were reported in the group that received advice and exercise therapy. The results of this study indicate that acupuncture is more effective than advice and exercise for the treatment of osteoarthritis of the hip.
A University of Maryland School of Medicine study showed that elderly arthritis patients with knee pain due to arthritis improved significantly when acupuncture was added to their treatment.? The randomized clinical trial determined whether acupuncture was a clinically safe and effective adjunctive therapy for older patients with osteoarthritis of the knee.?? The study addressed the addition of acupuncture to conventional therapy to determine if it would provide an added measure of pain relief, if the effects would last beyond treatment and if treatment would have any side effects.? Seventy-three patients were randomly divided into two groups. One group received twice-weekly acupuncture treatments and conventional therapy for eight weeks, and the other group received conventional therapy only. Patients who received acupuncture had significant pain relief and showed improvement in function. Those who did not receive acupuncture showed no significant change. No patients reported negative side effects from any acupuncture therapy session.

Edublog 2012 Award Nominations | Ctrl+Alt+Teach

Eddies 2012

As a newer blog on the educational block, this year is the first time I am submitting nominations for the 2012 Edublog Awards, a longterm community-based effort to recognize and promote the value of social media for educators and education. These awards truly are a way to give credit where credit is due as well as collect and share some of the best educational finds throughout the web all in an effort to improve the current state of education across the world. Personally, I am finding that just reading through the nominations themselves has led to finding amazing blogs, twitter chats, and social networks, among other things, that I have bookmarked and referenced frequently. One of my favorite blogs, Gridjumper?s Blog, is one such site I found through the Edublog Awards nomination listing. Now, I know, follow, and chat with her often, and I have learned so much about virtual words and machinima from her, enriching my own approach to education.

Don?t forget to nominate as well! Nominations are open until November 27th, 2012. ?

The following are my nominations for the Edublog 2012 Awards. I hope my readers might find something intriguing in this list as well!

Best individual blog

This amazing blog by Dr. Scott McLeod is the first blog I check on my Google Reader in the morning. That should say enough for this nomination (I write more about him and his blog below as well).

Best group blog

Hybrid Pedagogy is ?an academic and networked journal that combines the strands of critical and digital pedagogy to arrive at the best social and civil uses of technology and digital media in education.? Contributors come from a wide, interactive audience of all realms of education and embrace participation and social media in education. They hosted a mini-MOOC recently and established their own Twitter chat: #digped. The community is active and the ideas are emergent, exciting, research-based, and thought-provoking. Hybrid Pedagogy is not just a collaborative online journal but also a movement in the pursuit of professional and ?scholarly? blogging.

Best new blog

EdCamp Atlanta Unconference has its inaugural event this September, but they have been actively establishing an active and amazing blog on their website that includes posts from local educators as well as national figures in education. Ed Camp Atlanta takes pride in having a blog that makes their unconference more than just a one-day-and-nothing-more event. They use their blog as an outreach and networking resource for Atlanta-area educators and should be commended for their blogging activity.

Best ed tech / resource sharing blog

Gridjumper has been actively blogging and contributing to both the emergent topics of Game-Based Learning, Virtual Worlds in Education and Machinima to the point where her blog has become a leading authority in those topics. She is constantly sharing and contributing to the growing wealth of knowledge, especially at the helm of Machinima in education, and writes some of the most straight-forward and intriguing posts that anyone might find in an educational blog. The resources that she shares are indispensable?and very useful and her clear descriptions of easy to use albeit very emergent educational technology makes these topics palatable to even the most technology-resistant of educators.

Best administrator blog

This blog by Dr. Brett Jacobsen, Head of School for Mount Vernon Presbyterian School in Atlanta, Georgia, features his forward-thinking and open-minded leadership style as well as his emphasis on the emergent Design Thinking movement in education. He dedicated this blog and his work to the improvement of K-12 education by using new movements, thought-processes, and research and not being afraid to experiment. He advocates a ?fail up? mentality, embracing the fearlessness and illustrating himself that not being afraid of failure can mean amazing amounts of success in your endeavors.

Most influential blog post

Best individual tweeter

David Kapuler shares some of the most useful and interesting content on Twitter that I frequently read, reference, and retweet. I enjoy his recommendations for #FollowFriday, which is where I find some of the most interesting EduTweeps to follow and enjoy their content.

Best twitter hashtag

As the Game-Based Learning MOOC leaves its second iteration and goes possibly into its third iteration, the related #gamemooc hashtag and Wednesday night Tweet Chats are constantly going stronger and stronger. There is no other better hashtag, other than #gbl, that can give you the best information on games in education, MMORPGs, gamification, learning badges, virtual worlds, and so much more under the umbrella of Game-Based Learning. Also, the #gamemooc Wednesday TweetChat is in a league of its own, as there is no other TweetChat of which I am familiar that actively discusses and engages in debates regarding GBL.

Best free web tool

What better way to have free, multiuser F2F or audio only discussions, speakers, and presentations that also includes a live stream to YouTube with backchannel chat window for including larger audiences as well as Slideshare, screenshare, interactive Google Docs in the Hangout and much more? This is a SUPERB service that more educations need to use ASAP!

Best educational use of audio / video / visual /?podcast

EdReach is an amazingly comprehensive site featuring news and views on all points of education by the educators themselves. EdReach has ?channels? on which they host a multitude of podcasts as well as video both traditionally-recorded and Google+ Hangout on Air-recorded. The variance of perspective as well as the multiplatform usage of audio and visual is what makes EdReach extremely unique in the online social educational world, and I STRONGLY believe EdReach should receive credit for their hard work in corralling so many contributors and making their various presentation platforms function well! Not to mention that EdReach is also on web RADIO! How many educational group sites can claim that feature?

Best open PD / unconference / webinar series?

G.A.M.E. (Gamers Advancing Meaningful Education) broke ground with their multiplatform speaker series gathering experts in games and simulations in education to speak to a large audience interested in learning more and interacting with others interested in the topic. There is no other similar free development and networking opportunity that is hosted both using Google+ Hangouts on Air as well as with a backchannel in Second Life, YouTube chat, and Twitter chat.

Best educational use of a social network

I cannot possibly express this better than the website itself:

Gamers Advancing Meaningful Education (G.A.M.E) is an online community of global educators who game. At its core is an online synchronous gaming community. This intellectually curious network of educators develop curriculum, offer online open courses, webinars and F2F presentations on the opportunities and deeper learning that takes place in games.

G.A.M.E. is for educators who game, want to learn how to game, and want to incorporate gaming strategies into teaching and learning. Participants will become familiar with the use of massively online roleplaying games, commercial off-shelf games and sandbox genre games in their quest to innovate teaching and learning.

All educators are welcome, novice, dabbler, and hardcore gamer. Come game with us to level up on teaching and learning. It?s more than an affinity space for educators who game ? it?s a guild.

Best mobile app

I have been a fervent fan of Remind101 for quite some time. Their fast, secure, and safe SMS text messaging for teachers is so incredibly useful (and not just for reminders!), so when they came out with their iPhone app and later with their Android app, I jumped with joy. I use this app so frequently that I have it on my first page of app icons on my iPhone. They were able to take something complex and make the app so simple to use, even for first-time users and/or educators who struggle with new technologies. They are an remarkable educational startup who heard us teachers asking for an app and responded extremely quickly.

Lifetime achievement

Another nomination for the amazing blog by Dr. Scott McLeod. He really is one of THE most influential people in education today and has been for quite some time. He co-created the infamous ?Did You Know?? video series (aka ?Shift Happens) and constantly produces research as well as presents and keynotes. Meanwhile, he founded CASTLE (Center for the Advanced Study of Technology Leadership in Education) and his personal blog is incredibly riff with ideas and thoughts as well as information and motivation for those of us trying to make the change happen in education. If you are reading this list of nominations, I want to to walk away at the very least with this leader?s name and links to his work.

Doctors should consider hepatitis C testing: panel

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - A government-backed panel advises doctors to "consider offering screening" for hepatitis C to adults born between 1945 and 1965, in a draft statement released today.

The recommendations, from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF), are an update to the group's 2004 statement, which recommended against screening people at average risk of hepatitis C. At the time, it also said there wasn't enough evidence for or against screening high-risk adults, such as injection drug users.

"There were a lot of uncertainties in 2004," said Dr. Albert Siu from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, who is co-vice chair of the task force.

"The evidence has increased over the years. The tests haven't really changed, but there is more certainty in terms of the overall net benefit here," he told Reuters Health.

Earlier this year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention called for hepatitis C testing for all baby boomers, who make up three-quarters of people in the United States with the infection.

The USPSTF now also recommends screening all high-risk adults, regardless of when they were born.

Hepatitis C is passed through blood. Along with drug users who share needles, people who had a blood transfusion or received an organ transplant before mandatory viral testing began in 1992 are also at increased risk of hepatitis C.

Between 1 and 2 percent of people in the U.S. have hepatitis C, which can cause cirrhosis and liver failure over many years. Among the baby boomer generation, that rate is between 3 and 4 percent.

In the new draft recommendations, the task force says there is enough evidence showing blood tests used to detect hepatitis C are accurate. However, there is no direct, long-term proof that screening ultimately reduces liver disease and death - in part because the harmful effects of hepatitis C progress slowly and it takes many years to see such results.

Siu said the screening process is safer than it used to be because fewer people are getting invasive liver biopsies to confirm positive blood tests. That helps tip the scale in favor of screening.

In addition, for many people with hepatitis C, treatment with anti-viral drugs - especially three-drug combinations including medications recently approved by the Food and Drug Administration - can decrease the amount of virus in the blood to an undetectable level, the USPSTF found.

Side effects of the newest drugs, known as boceprevir (Victrelis) and telaprevir (Incivek), include anemia and rashes. Those medications are added to a combination regimen of ribavirin and peginterferon alfa (also commonly known as Pegasys and Peg-Intron), which has been the standard of treatment since the early 2000s.

"In general, when we are talking about infectious diseases screening, (question) one is prevalence rate in the population and two is, are there any effective treatments?" said Dr. Lu-Yu Hwang, who has studied hepatitis C infection and transmission at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.

"Today? people are more optimistic for hepatitis C treatment than for hepatitis B or HIV. People believe there's a good way you can get rid of the virus, and we do have a good number of people recovering from chronic infection," Hwang, who is not part of the USPSTF, told Reuters Health.

Evidence reviews completed for the task force also suggest that for pregnant women with hepatitis C, delivering a baby via cesarean section or avoiding breastfeeding does not cut down on virus transmission. That suggests transmission may occur while a fetus is still in utero, Dr. Roger Chou and colleagues from Oregon Health & Science University in Portland said.

Hwang suggested screening could be useful for women who are considering becoming pregnant. Then if they are positive for hepatitis C, women can be treated and reduce their viral levels before there's a risk of passing the virus on to the baby.

The reviews used by the USPSTF are published in the Annals of Internal Medicine. The draft recommendations will be on the task force website (http://bit.ly/9e1DhW) and available for public comment between November 27 and December 24.

Muscle powers spearing mantis shrimp attacks

ScienceDaily (Nov. 22, 2012) ? A hungry mantis shrimp may be the last thing that a passing fish sees before it is snatched from the water by the predator. Maya deVries from the University of California, Berkeley, says 'Spearer mantis shrimps stay in their sandy burrows and they wait for a fast-moving prey item to come by, but then they come out of nowhere and grab the prey with their long skinny appendages.' However, little was know about how these vicious predators unleash their lightning-fast attacks.

According to deVries, the spearing shrimp are closely related to smasher mantis shrimps, which pulverise the shells of crustaceans and molluscs with a single explosive blow from their mighty claws. Having decided to find out how the crustaceans unleash their deadly assaults, deVries says, 'We thought that the spearers would be just as fast -- if not faster -- than the smashers because they have a smaller time window in which to capture their prey.' deVries and her colleagues publish their discovery that Lysiosquillina maculata spearer mantis shrimps power their mighty spears with muscle alone while smaller Alachosquilla vicina spearer mantis shrimps use a more conventional catapult mechanism in The Journal of Experimental Biology.

Working with her PhD advisor, Sheila Patek, deVries took a short trip along the corridor to Roy Caldwell's lab to film some of his L. maculata mantis shrimps. Coaxing the nocturnal lobster-sized crustaceans to assault frozen prawns, deVries recalls that the animals were reluctant to attack; 'They probably didn't like the bright lights', she says. However, when the duo analysed the speed of the strikes, they were surprised that the spearer's harpoon speed was much slower than that of their smashing cousin's. Explaining that smashers can unleash strikes at speeds ranging from 10 to 23m/s, the duo were taken aback that L. maculata could only muster 2 m/s.

Smasher mantis shrimp store catapult energy in skeletal springs that they unleash during a deadly assault; therefore deVries analysed the trajectories of several L. maculata claws in action, and realised that the hefty crustaceans were not using the same mechanism. 'The spear has all the same components [as the smashers]', explains deVries, but she adds that the shape of some of the structures are subtly different and the spring did not deform to store energy prior to an attack -- possibly because it is too stiff -- preventing L. maculata from firing a ballistic attack. 'If the L. maculata movement is similar to other ambush predators that have muscle-driven strikes, it is possible that these guys are creating strikes with muscle movement', says deVries.

Next, deVries and Patek tested the reactions of another, smaller mantis shrimp, Alachosquilla vicina, to find out whether all spearing mantis shrimps have opted for muscle-powered strikes. Elizabeth Murphy filmed the animals snapping up brine shrimp however, it was obvious that the diminutive crustaceans were using a spring-loaded catapult to spear their nimble prey. The team could clearly see energy-storing deformations in the spring structure before the mantis shrimp unfurled their deadly assaults at 6m/s.

But the team were still puzzled by L. maculata's sluggish performance. Maybe the lab-based animals had become too unfit to produce explosive attacks? Traveling to Australia to film L. maculata hunting in the wild, the team were relieved to see that the animals' reactions were well within the range of speeds that they had measured in the lab. Adult L. maculata use muscle-powered attacks all the time.

Having confirmed that it is possible for the large shrimp to produce lightening-fast strikes without using a spring mechanism, deVries says 'We're trying to get more L. maculata in the lab to look at the complete size range in one species to see how the strike scales and to find out if there is a size threshold above which you can't have a spring-loaded strike anymore.'

Joaquim Barbosa Sworn In As Brazil's First Black Supreme Court Justice

BRASILIA, Brazil ? Brazil's Supreme Court is now headed by a black justice for the first time.

Joaquim Barbosa was sworn in on Thursday. He became the only black ever to serve on the court when he joined it in 2003, even though more than half of the country's 192 million people identify themselves as having African descent.

Barbosa, 58, was elected in October to a two-year tenure as Supreme Court president. His election was a foregone conclusion since the court's presidency always goes to the justice who has served on the bench the longest.

Over the past several weeks he gained national and international renown presiding over a high-profile corruption trial involving a congressional cash-for-votes scheme. The court has convicted 25 people including the former chief of staff of ex-President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

President Dilma Rousseff, members of her Cabinet, state governors, congressional leaders and several sports and entertainment personalities were present at Barbosa's swearing in.

"The multiculturalism that characterizes the Brazilian people is evident here today with Joaquim Barbosa heading the highest court of the land," said Ophir Cavalcante, president of the Brazilian Bar Association in a speech during the swearing in ceremony.

Barbosa as Supreme Court president "has a strong symbolic impact for Brazilian blacks," Valter Silveiro, coordinator of the Center for Afro-Brazilian Studies of the University of Sao Carlos, said. "The new generations of blacks will have the opportunity that my generation never had ? of seeing a black man presiding over one of the three branches of government."

Silveiro said Barbosa's history, background and achievements "strengthen affirmative action programs that try to increase the presence of blacks in the country's universities."

Barbosa was born in 1954 in the small town of Paracatu in Minas Gerais state, where his father worked as a bricklayer.

When he was 16 Barbosa went to the capital, Brasilia, to study. He worked as a cleaner and a typesetter at the Senate to pay for his studies at the University of Brasilia's law school.

After graduating he was hired by the Foreign Ministry and served three years at the Brazilian Embassy in Finland.

A former federal prosecutor, Barbosa taught law at Rio de Janeiro State University and was a visiting scholar at the Human Rights Institute of Columbia University's law school in New York and the UCLA law school in California.

Gamers pwn young doctors at robotic surgery ? Video Games ...

The next time you have to go under the knife, you might want to ask the doctor if he?s played any good video games lately. According to a new medical study, gamers have are more likely to have the strong hand-eye coordination skills required for robotic surgery than non-gaming medical residents.

Researchers at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) at Galveston took a sample of high school sophomores as well as college students, all of whom said they played video games for multiple hours every day, and then tested their skills in a robotic surgery simulator. The same tests were also given to a sampling of the medical school?s residents.

Their performance was rated across 20 different parameters. Surprisingly (but perhaps not), the high school students ? average age 16 ? had the best average scores. The college students had the second best scores, while the UTMB residents were at the bottom of group.

As if that wasn?t evidence enough, the entire idea for the study was sparked when lead author Dr. Sami Kilic took was with his son, an ?avid gamer,? at a medical convention. Kilic said he was amazed when he saw his son try out a robotic surgery simulator that was on display. He was ?immediately at ease with the technology,? Kilic said.

Robotic surgery is quickly becoming a highly practiced form of medicine. From robotic prostate removal to incredibly precise eye surgery, this emerging form of medical technology is safer, and drastically cuts back on patient recovery time.

It is not that surprising that gamers would be able to grasp the controls and have the precision required for such a task. And in fact, there are actually video games that simulate surgery. So if games can teach people how to drive, why not surgery too?
