140-car pileup in Texas fog kills two, hurts dozens

A deadly highway crash involving dozens of cars near Beaumont, Texas, darkened Thanksgiving Day for travelers. NBC's Diana Alvear reports.

By NBC News staff and news services

Updated at 6:50 p.m. ET:?Two people died and scores of people were hurt Thursday when up to 140 vehicles collided in in dense fog Southeast Texas in a pileup that left trucks twisted on top of each other and authorities rushing to pull survivors from the wreckage.

The chain-reaction collision occurred in extremely foggy conditions at about 8:45 a.m. Thanksgiving Day on Interstate 10 southwest of Beaumont, a Gulf Coast city about 80 miles east of Houston.

A man and a woman were killed in a Chevy Suburban SUV crushed by a tractor trailer, the Texas Department of Public Safety told KFDM-TV.

Jefferson County sheriff's Deputy Rod Carroll said in a news release that 80 to 90 people were transported to hospitals with 10 to 12 of those in serious to critical condition. He said 140 to 150 vehicles were involved in the pileup.

According to DPS, a crash on the eastbound side of the highway led to other accidents in a dangerous chain reaction. There were multiple crashes on the other side of the highway as well.

"We have 18-wheelers on top of cars, we have cars on top of cars. It's just catastrophic," Carroll told NBC News.

Some of the vehicles in the pileup on Interstate 10 are seen Thursday.

He told The Associated Press the fog was so thick that deputies did not immediately realize they were dealing with multiple accidents.

I-10's eastbound lanes were re-opened Thursday evening after more than eight hours.

Texas Department of Public Safety trooper Stephanie Davis told KFDM that two people in an SUV died after the crash. She said at least 100 cars and trucks were involved in the accident.

Carroll said uninjured drivers tried to help as authorities sorted through the wreckage.

"It's just people helping people," Carroll said. "The foremost thing in this holiday season is how other travelers were helping us when we were overwhelmed, sitting and holding, putting pressure on people that were injured."

The highway had been crowded with motorists traveling during the holiday. Many of the vehicles were moving close to the posted speed of 70 mph despite dense fog that limited visibility, Carroll said.

Some of the injured on Interstate 10 in Texas are treated near the crash scene Thursday.

Best Buy Struggles Against Online Merchants | Small Business Trends

It might be the most visible battle between the old and new retail business model. Best Buy has complained that its big box stores have literally become showrooms for Amazon and other online retailers. Customers come in to check out new electronics and other merchandise at their local Best Buy only to comparison shop and eventually buy the same item at a lower price online. All businesses face shifting markets and changing business models. Here are some looks at how companies of all sizes keep adapting.

The Way We Were

Showrooming. Analysts say the key to Best Buy?s future, if it has one, is to accept a reality in which smaller numbers of customers will buy products in their stores. Instead, those customers are more likely to use retail locations as a place to test drive and gain hands-on experience with products they will later buy online. The first step, the experts say, is to find a way to compete effectively online against rivals like Amazon, not to cling to a fading business model. Yahoo! Finance

Online evolution. Even businesses founded and operated online for their entire existence face ongoing challenges to their survival. As Small Business Trends founder and CEO Anita Campbell explains in this interview, online businesses, too, must constantly evolve to meet changing revenue models, for example, shifts from banner ads to sponsored posts, etc. No matter where you operate your business, always be prepared to make changes. Better Marketing

Full Speed Ahead

Brick and mortar. The evolution is occurring in the opposite direction too. Some brick and mortar businesses are not suffering, but are being enhanced by the low cost marketing possibilities provided by the Internet. Tamara Hudson, founder and owner of Encore Unique Boutique, a Kansas-based business specializing in women?s clothing and home decor, has expanded while businesses around her struggle, thanks largely to her innovative use of inexpensive online social media marketing. Just do it. One key to success in the ever-changing marketplace may be to let go of the business conventions of the past completely. The best business models may not be based on following well-established paths. Instead, they may be on the road less taken, exploring unknown territory and doing things that we, as entrepreneurs, find terrifying. When creating his first book about online freelancing, Tom Ewer admits he had little idea where he was headed. In the end, the only thing he borrowed from a more successful business was a motto: ?Just do it.? MyWifeQuitHerJob.com

Make sure they pay attention. Whether you do business online or in a storefront down town, the first step is to make sure you aren?t overlooked or ignored. In fact, competition for attention online is more intense than ever, but there are some easy ways to make sure your Website? isn?t passed over, says Sean Jackson, CFO of Copyblogger. Here are some of Jackson?s tips on how to avoid being ignored in the online world. Buzz Small Business Magazine

Out on a Limb

Stand out. But in the end you must be sure your company does more than simply grab attention. If your business is just the latest shiny object for customers, they will forget you when the next new thing comes along. Instead, make sure your business stands out from the competition below the surface too. Again, it doesn?t matter whether your business is operated online or off. These tips will help you set your company apart in a way customers find the most meaningful. The Big Red Tomato Company

Remember the obvious. We?ve talked a lot about making sure that you aren?t ignored and that your business stands out to customers. But, as motivational speaker Carol Ritter reminds us in this post, it?s very important that customers never feel ignored either. The key to business success is to pay attention to your customers. It?s the best way to make sure they keep coming back and that you continue evolving your business to meet their needs. The Voice of Business

Facebook Is About To Send One Billion Emails

Billion, with a B. An email to every single one of its users—so actually a little over a billion at this point. In other words, one seventh of the entire Earth's population is getting hit with one message. More »

BenQ GW2450

The BenQ GW series brings VA (Vertical Alignment) panel technology to the company's consumer line of desktop displays. Quality-wise, VA technology falls somewhere in between IPS (In Plane Switching) and TN (Twisted Nematic) panel technology; they offer better color and black levels than TN panels but can't match the color and viewing angle performance of IPS panels. With the GW2450 ($179 street) you get a 24-inch monitor that delivers the deeply saturated colors and inky blacks that make VA panels an attractive alternative to TN panels. You don't get much in the way of features though, and it lacks HDMI and DisplayPort connectivity, but it's a good bargain nonetheless.

Green Tech

Design and Features
A matte black cabinet with rounded glossy black bezels holds the 24-inch panel, which has a native resolution of 1,920-by-1,080 and a 16:9 aspect ratio. At 2.5 inches thick it is relatively bulky for a monitor that uses LED backlighting. The cabinet is supported by an oval base that can be tilted forward and backward but lacks height, swivel, and pivot adjustability.

I/O ports are scarce; DVI and VGA video inputs are located at the rear of the cabinet, but that's all you get with this model. There are no HDMI or USB ports, nor are there any audio inputs or speakers. There are six buttons on the right side of the cabinet, including the power switch. In addition to a menu button that launches the OSD (on screen display) system there are hot keys for changing the input source, the display mode, and the aspect ratio. There's also an Enter key for selecting menu choices.

There are six display modes, including Standard, Movie, Game Photo, sRGB, and Eco. Basic picture settings include Brightness, Contrast, Sharpness, Gamma, and Color Temperature, and you can fine tune individual Red, Green, and Blue levels as well as Hue and Saturation levels. When using an analog (VGA) signal you can use the Auto Adjust function or manually adjust Phase, Clock, and Position settings.

The GW2450 comes with a three-year warranty covering parts, labor, and backlighting. It also comes with a CD containing a user guide and drivers and a VGA cable. A DVI cable is not included in the box.

Performance
The GW2450's VA panel boasts a native contrast ratio of 5000:1 (most TN panels have a native contrast ratio of 1000:1 but use a variable backlighting technology to create a much higher "dynamic" contrast ratio ). As a result, the GW2450 produces very deep blacks, which helps give colors a great deal of pop. Swatches from the DisplayMate Color Scales test were well saturated but not oversaturated, and full screen primary colors appeared uniform with no noticeable hot spots.

Grayscale reproduction was mixed; the panel had no trouble displaying the lightest shades of gray on the 64-Step Grayscale test, but instead of gradating to dark gray the two darkest shades were black. Not surprisingly, shadow detail on my test photos was less than optimal.

The GW2450's 4-millisecond (gray-to-gray) pixel response handled fast motion gaming without issue while playing the PC version of Assassin's Creed II. There was no noticeable lag or ghosting while displaying my 1080p test video, The Magic of Flight, but viewing angles were narrow, with obvious color shifting occurring at extreme side angles. Top and bottom viewing angle performance was also sketchy. Although viewing angle performance is better than what you get with TN panel technology it can't match the performance of IPS-based monitors such as the Dell UltraSharp U2412M.

The GW2450 used 31 watts of power during my testing while running in standard mode, which is typical for a panel of this size. However, it used only 18 watts while operating in Eco mode, which produces a dimmer picture but is still bright enough for everyday use. The monitor uses recycled packing materials and is Energy Star 5.1 qualified, all of which earn it our Greentech stamp of approval.

If you've been itching for a VA monitor but have limited funds, the BenQ GW2450 is an excellent choice. Granted, you'll have to live without an HDMI port and other niceties like an ergonomic stand and USB ports, but you do get inky blacks and robust colors at a price that's hard to beat. It won't put much of a dent in your utility bill either. If you require better grayscale accuracy and can live with a smaller screen, consider our Editors' Choice for budget monitors, the IPS-based Asus VS229H-P.

Madison County Fighting Crime With Criminals Cell Phones ...

EDWARDSVILLE, IL. (KTVI) ? Cell phones have long been the target of thieves but now they are also an effective crime fighting tool.

The Madison County State`s Attorney calls his latest crime-fighting weapon a, ?County-wide data collection network.?

The device can access critical information stored on the phones of criminals and transfer it in a matter of seconds to an investigator`s laptop.? That information can then be shared with any police agency.

?Getting that information immediately can make all the difference,? said Gibbons.

The Madison County Sheriff and Alton Police departments already have the device and several more will be distributed to police agencies within the county.

The device is mobile.? It can be taken to a crime scene or sent to another department within the county.

?Before these devices were available, you could still get the information but it might take months,? said Gibbons.

He believes the product, sold by Celebrite, will put a dent in a variety of crimes including drug cases.

?Cell phones and text messages are being used overwhelmingly in those cases,? explained Gibbons.

The county?s drug asset forfeiture program provides the funds for the equipment.? Gibbons calls it an effective use of the money and property seized from criminals. ?It?s a great way for us to turn the tables on them.?
A new device allows law enforcement to tap into all that information the second they seize a cell phone from a criminal.

Gibbons argues that in some crimes, second matter, so the quicker an investigator has leads the better.

The device is in the process of landing into the hands of several Madison County police departments, but the idea is for county investigators to share the tool, it?s portable so it can be sent to any crime scene.
