Afghan suicide bomber wounds 14 in Kandahar attack

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (AP) ? An Afghan official says a suicide bomber on a motorcycle has wounded three NATO troops and 11 civilians in an attack against the main gate of Kandahar Airfield, the main U.S. military base in the south.

Javeed Faisal, who is a spokesman for the provincial governor, said the attack took place just after nightfall Thursday and targeted the gate that provides access to the military side of the city's airport.

Suicide attacks are not uncommon in Kandahar, the birthplace of the Taliban.

Could a simple breath test replace colonoscopy for cancer screening?

It may be too soon to suggest that you can forgo your colonoscopy for a breath test, but researchers are working in that direction. For those who refuse to have their colonoscopy, a fecal occult blood test can at least let you know if you need more testing. The good news is there may someday be an inexpensive, less invasive way to detect the 2nd leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S. by simply having your breath analyzed.

Researchers say the test that was 75% accurate for detecting colon cancer in studies is still in the early stages of development.

The study included 37 patients with colorectal cancer and compared to 41 healthy controls whose breath was analyzed for the presence and pattern of VOCs (volatile organic compounds), based on 58 different compounds.

The results showed colorectal cancer patients exhale a different pattern of the compounds that the researchers identified by using a probabilistic neural network (PNN).

Dr. Donato F. Altomare, a researcher with the Department of Emergency and Organ Transplantation at the Universite degli Studi di Bari Aldo Moro in Bari said in a press release, ?Our study's findings provide further support for the value of breath testing as a screening tool."

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends routine colorectal cancer screening beginning at age 50 up to age 75. If you have polyps, your doctor might recommend colonoscopy and then a repeat in 5 years. For others, time between colonoscopies is longer, but speak with your physician for recommendations.

Colon cancer has no symptoms until the disease is advanced, making screening especially important. Family history, high red meat intake, advanced age, type 2 diabetes, smoking, heavy alcohol use and history of inflammatory bowel disease can raise the chances that you?ll develop cancer of the colon or rectum.

Colon cancer isn't the only disease researchers are trying to detect with a simple breath test.

Dr. Peter Mazzone at the Cleveland Clinic has developed a breath analyzer that can potentially detect several types of lung cancer with over 80% accuracy.

The technique is easy and non-expensive, Altomare says. Finding out whether you have colon cancer by having your breath analyzed would mean less risk of complications and could potentially save health care dollars.

The breath test isn't ready for use as a routine screening for cancer yet.

Detecting colorectal and other types of cancer with a breath analyzer based on exhaled compounds is a new field of study that could someday replace the need for colonoscopy and other invasive testing for even lung cancer.

The new study shows 75% accuracy for detecting the disease, but more research is needed. Until then, make sure you get your colonoscopy. Colorectal cancer is most curable when caught early.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Another major storm moving into Northern California was expected to bring more pouring rain, flooding and additional problems to an area already soaked after two major storms, forecasters said Saturday.

Residents of Northern California enjoyed just a bit of a respite, but the next storm ? the third in a string of powerful weather systems to hit the region since Wednesday ? is expected to force several rivers over their banks after it arrives Saturday evening, National Weather Service forecasters said.

With rivers and streams already running high and the ground saturated from the previous storms, the National Weather Service issued flood warnings early Saturday for both the Napa and Russian rivers, two rivers north of San Francisco with a history of flooding, National Weather Service hydrologist Mark Strudley said.

"Some roads will become inundated and some of the agricultural areas will take on some water," Strudley said.

The Napa River was expected to flood near St. Helena and Napa around noon on Sunday, while the Russian River was expected to flood near Guerneville early Monday morning, Strudley said.

The Napa River overwhelmed downtown Napa in 2005, flooding or destroying about 1,000 homes and forcing thousands of residents to leave the area.

With that in mind, residents worked to fill 700 bags with 10 tons of sand Saturday morning, city official Danny Lerma said.

"When you see it happen, you always remember, and you say, 'I'm going to be better prepared,'" Lerma told KGO-TV. "And that's what they're doing right now."

Forecasters also issued flood warnings for the Truckee River near Lake Tahoe and the Susan River in Lassen County, as well as the Eel, Navarro and Van Duzen rivers in far Northern California.

A flash flood watch was also in effect for a wide area of Northern California through Sunday evening.

At the peak of Friday's storm, thousands of people were without power, but by Saturday Pacific Gas & Electric was reporting only scattered outages, spokesman J.D. Guidi said.

The utility had extra crews standing by in anticipation of new outages caused by falling branches and strong winds, Guidi said.

The stormy weather may be behind a crash that involved several cars on Interstate 280 outside of San Francisco on Saturday morning, as well as the death of a Pacific Gas & Electric worker in West Sacramento who was killed after his truck crashed into a traffic signal pole during the stormy weather Friday.

With the ground saturated with water, increasing the possibility of trees and branches falling onto roadways, and the roads expected to be slick, California Highway Patrol officials urged drivers to be extra cautious.

Officials were also warning people to be careful along beaches.

A high surf advisory was issued by the weather service, with swells expected to be 14 to 16 feet along the Northern California coast. In Southern California, high surf was predicted in Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties.

In San Diego, the Ocean Beach Municipal Pier was closed because of big waves and high tides.

Elsewhere in the West, a state of emergency was declared in Reno, Sparks and Washoe County in Nevada due to expected flooding as a storm packing heavy rain and strong winds swept through the area.

Reno city spokeswoman Michele Anderson said public servants would be working overtime through the weekend to control what's expected to be the worst flooding there since 2005. The National Weather Service issued a flood warning along the Truckee River.

The weather also prompted cancellations of Christmas parades and tree lightings in Sparks and Truckee, just across the border from California.

Also, a storm rushed through southern Oregon this week, lingering inland over the Rogue Valley and dropping record rainfall. Forecasters said the region should expect more storms over the next few days.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Satellite photos indicate North Korea has moved two sections of a long-range rocket in preparation for a launch that would alarm both its adversaries and lone ally China.

But North Korea has yet to announce its plans, leaving some uncertainty whether and when it will proceed with a launch that would be sure to draw international condemnation.

The U.S.-Korea Institute at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies said Thursday the recent activity at the Sohae site on North Korea's northwest coast suggests it could be ready to launch a three-stage rocket by the end of the first week in December.

A commercial satellite photo taken Monday shows two long trailers, likely used to carry the first two stages of a rocket, according to an analysis written for 38 North, the institute's website. The trailers are parked near the main missile assembly building, where it says rocket stages would be checked before moving to the launch pad for takeoff about a half-mile away.

In April, North Korea fired a rocket from the same site in a failed attempt to launch a satellite into space, drawing U.N. censure as that technology can be easily converted into use for missiles. The launch dashed prospects for a resumption of international aid-for-disarmament talks.

South Korean officials confirmed Thursday there are signs of preparations at the rocket site. A launch in the next few weeks would be seen in Seoul as timed for South Korea's Dec. 19 presidential election.

Victor Cha, a former White House director of Asia policy, said Pyongyang has a track record of reacting to elections in both the U.S. and South Korea in provocative ways, most recently when President Barack Obama took office in 2009. North conducted a rocket and nuclear test within four months.

Another motivating factor for the North could be that South Korea recently won U.S. approval to expand its ballistic-missile range, and this week, was readying its own satellite launch. However, it scrapped those launch plans Thursday, citing technical problems.

North Korea conducted nuclear tests in 2006 and 2009, and Washington says Pyongyang uses long-range rocket launches to develop missiles that could target the United States, although it is not yet believed to have miniaturized a nuclear device to mount on a missile.

A rocket launch would not only dismay the U.S. and its allies, but the North's chief ally and source of economic support, China, which is midway through a leadership transition.

"If North Korea does carry out a launch, Beijing will not be happy," said Evans Revere, a former senior U.S. State Department official and expert on East Asia. "It flies in the face of China's request for North Korea to reduce tensions in the region and not escalate them."

Past launches have happened in spring or summer when weather conditions are better, but according to the analysis on the institute's website 38 North, there are several telltale signs that one is being readied now.

As well as the trailers, the images show empty tanks in four locations suggest fueling preparations. There's work under way at an instrumentation site that would monitor a launch. Also, temporary structures for keeping the snow off cars have been erected near a building used to house visiting VIPs.

But any launch could still be weeks away. The analysis notes that North Korea has yet to provide notification for international flight and shipping of splashdown zones for the used rocket stages, as it did before the April launch. Nor has it filed a plan for a frequency for a signal that would be emitted by a satellite.

David Wright, a physicist with the Union of Concerned Scientists, said the launch preparation so soon after the April failure "calls into question whether the North could have analyzed and fixed whatever went wrong." North Korea has yet to successfully test a rocket with a range of more than 800 miles.

Another failure would embarrass young North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, not yet a year in the job after the death of longtime ruler Kim Jong Il, his father.
