Resveratrol falls short in health benefits

Friday, October 26, 2012

Resveratrol, an ingredient in red wine thought to improve insulin sensitivity, reduce risk of heart disease and increase longevity, does not appear to offer these benefits in healthy women, new research at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis indicates.

The study, reported online Oct. 25 in Cell Metabolism, involved 29 post-menopausal women who did not have type 2 diabetes and who were reasonably healthy. For 12 weeks, half took an over-the-counter resveratrol supplement, and the rest got a placebo, or sugar pill.

"Resveratrol supplements have become popular because studies in cell systems and rodents show that resveratrol can improve metabolic function and prevent or reverse certain health problems like diabetes, heart disease and even cancer," says senior investigator Samuel Klein, MD, director of Washington University's Center for Human Nutrition. "But our data demonstrate that resveratrol supplementation does not have metabolic benefits in relatively healthy, middle-aged women."

The results were somewhat surprising because earlier studies suggested that drinking red wine lowers the risk of health problems.

"Few studies have evaluated the effects of resveratrol in people," Klein explains. "Those studies were conducted in people with diabetes, older adults with impaired glucose tolerance or obese people who had more metabolic problems than the women we studied. So it is possible that resveratrol could have beneficial effects in people who are more metabolically abnormal than the subjects who participated in the study."

Klein, the Danforth Professor of Medicine and Nutritional Science, directs the Division of Geriatrics and Nutritional Science and the Center for Applied Research Sciences. He says many people who have heard about red wine's health benefits want to take resveratrol supplements to get the benefits of red wine without consuming large amounts of alcohol. In recent years, annual U.S. sales of resveratrol supplements have risen to $30 million.

As part of the study, Klein and his colleagues gave 15 post-menopausal women 75 milligrams of resveratrol daily, the same amount they'd get from drinking 8 liters of red wine, and compared their insulin sensitivity to 14 others who took a placebo.

The team measured the women's sensitivity to insulin and the rate of glucose uptake in their muscles, infusing insulin into their bodies and measuring their metabolic response to different doses.

"It's the most sensitive approach we have for evaluating insulin action in people," he says. "And we were unable to detect any effect of resveratrol. In addition, we took small samples of muscle and fat tissue from these women to look for possible effects of resveratrol in the body's cells, and again, we could not find any changes in the signaling pathways involved in metabolism."

But if resveratrol doesn't have a health benefit, then why are red wine drinkers less likely to develop heart disease and diabetes? Klein says there may be something else in red wine that provides the benefit.

"The purpose of our study was not to identify the active ingredient in red wine that improves health but to determine whether supplementation with resveratrol has independent, metabolic effects in relatively healthy people," he says. "We were unable to detect a metabolic benefit of resveratrol supplementation in our study population, but this does not preclude the possibility that resveratrol could have a synergistic effect when combined with other compounds in red wine."

Cheerleading needs sports safety rules, doctors say

Associated Press

Posted on October 22, 2012 at 4:53 PM

Updated yesterday at 4:55 PM

CHICAGO?-- Cheerleading isn?t just jumping and waving pompoms?it has become as athletic and potentially as dangerous as a sport and should be designated one to improve safety, the nation?s leading group of pediatricians says.

The number of cheerleaders injured each year has climbed dramatically in the last two decades. Common stunts that pose risks include tossing and flipping cheerleaders in the air and creating human pyramids that reach 15 feet high or more.

In a new policy statement released online Monday in the journal Pediatrics, the American Academy of Pediatrics says school sports associations should designate cheerleading as a sport, and make it subject to safety rules and better supervision. That would include on-site athletic trainers, limits on practice time and better qualified coaches, the academy says.

Just like other athletes, cheerleaders should be required to do conditioning exercises and undergo physical exams before joining the squad, the new policy says.

"Not everyone is fully aware of how cheerleading has evolved over the last couple of decades. It used to be just standing on the sidelines and doing cheers and maybe a few jumps," said Dr. Cynthia LaBella, a sports medicine specialist at Chicago?s Lurie Children?s Hospital and an author of the new policy.

But she said cheerleading often results in injuries that include severe sprains, broken arms and legs, neck injuries and concussions.

Last year, there were almost 37,000 emergency room visits for cheerleading injuries among girls aged 6 to 22, according to data from the Consumer Product Safety Commission. That?s more than four times higher than in 1980, when cheerleading was tamer.

While there are still traditional cheerleading squads that support schools? athletic teams, some schools and private clubs have separate cheerleading teams that compete against other teams.

Kali Wald of Elburn, Ill., suffered a serious concussion last year during an acrobatic routine with her high school?s competitive team; teammates tossed her in the air but she landed wrong twice, first on her upper back and neck, then on her head. She blacked out for several minutes.

Her father, Dave Wald, said her coaches didn?t realize she was seriously injured and never called an ambulance. She still has short-term memory loss and can?t attend school full-time because of dizziness, headaches and other concussion symptoms.

Kali, 18, said she believes that cheerleading should be considered a sport and made safer.

Her father agreed and said there needs to be better awareness about the rigors of cheerleading and the potential risks.

Injuries have increased as cheerleading has become more popular. Data suggest there are more than 3 million cheerleaders nationwide aged 6 and older, mostly girls. That includes about 400,000 in high school, according to data cited in the new policy.

While the overall injury rate in high school cheerleading is lower than in other girls sports, including gymnastics, soccer and field hockey, the rate of catastrophic injuries like skull fractures and paralyzing spine injuries is higher, the academy noted.

Kasey Bronstein, 14, and her sister Kori, 17, of Mahwah, N.J., both tore a knee tendon while cheerleading for a private competitive team run by their parents. They twisted their knees doing acrobatic moves while standing on the raised-up hands of their teammates. They had knee surgery last November, followed by extensive physical therapy, and have returned to cheerleading.

Both said it should be considered a sport but they also think it?s already pretty safe.

"They?re kind of making it too safe, taking out skills that are very exciting to do," Kori said. That includes a double flip stunt no longer allowed on her team.

Some schools and state high school sports associations already consider cheerleading a sport and require the kind of safety oversight that the academy is recommending. But many do not, said Jim Lord, executive director of the American Association of Cheerleading Coaches & Administrators. Some don?t consider it a sport because not all cheerleading squads are involved in their own competitions, he said.

Lord said the academy?s policy mirrors many of his group?s safety recommendations for high schools and colleges.

That includes limiting the height of human pyramids in high school cheerleading to just two people. The academy also says routines that include pyramids, tumbling or tosses should not be performed on hard surfaces.

Lisa Kluchorosky, a sports medicine specialist who works with the academy and the National Athletic Trainers Association, said the new policy will help erase misconceptions that cheerleading is not very athletic.

"The statistics are compelling and you can?t turn your head from that," she said.

You betcha: Fargo awaits TV version of hit movie

FARGO, N.D. (AP) ? Ask folks in Fargo what they first thought about the 1996 movie that made their city famous, and some will tell you they were not fans.

Some residents initially didn't appreciate the Coen brothers' dark humor or were offended by the extreme violence and depiction of Scandinavian culture. Not to mention those heavy accents on "you betcha" and "ya sure."

But the fame and cash it brought Fargo eventually brought the city around. Now, 16 years later, Fargo awaits the debut of a new cable television show by the same name, and many residents here are less apprehensive about how their hometown will be portrayed this time around. Just ask Kristin Rudrud.

"Anything the Coen brothers are going to be involved in is going to be brilliant," said Rudrud, 57, who played a supporting role in the movie and has a hankering to promote everything about her hometown. "And they love Fargo. They love this area. So it will be done in a very fun and loving way."

The Oscar-winning "Fargo" starred Frances McDormand as Marge Gunderson, a pregnant police chief who investigates a series of murders, and William H. Macy as a car salesman who hires two criminals, played by Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare, to kidnap his wife. In one of the final scenes, Stormare feeds Buscemi's body into a wood chipper.

Though the movie's story is mostly based in Minnesota, it made Fargo a household name for many across the country ? to the early dismay of some city folk who watched the premiere at the Fargo Theater in 1996.The theater was quiet inside and some moviegoers were offended, said Margie Bailly, who was executive director of the Fargo Theater at the time. Some residents even walked out.

"Those of us who were laughing were a little lonely," she said.

But locals later warmed up as the film was nominated for seven Academy Awards, and Fargo started to see the benefits from all the publicity. The theater hosted a free Oscar party with a polka band and Jell-O treats that Entertainment Weekly billed as one of the top soirees of the evening.

That event was publicized in several countries, and Fargo cashed in. Donations flowed for the theater's restoration, which dovetailed with plans to revitalize the city's downtown.

Sixteen years later, travelers looking to see the real Fargo still swing through, with many flocking to take a picture next to the iconic wood chipper, autographed on the chute by the Coen brothers and displayed at the city's main tourism center. Tourism staff hand out ear-flap hats to tourists and take pictures of them stuffing the leg of a mannequin into the Yard Shark.

"A good majority of people come in here just looking for the wood chipper," said Jayne Rieth, who works at the tourism center. She didn't like the movie on the big screen, but watched it at home recently so she could be better informed at work. And the tourism center and shops around town sell plenty of wood chipper T-shirts, shot glasses, koozies, mugs and ? of course ? ice scrapers.

City boosters hope the TV show produced by Joel and Ethan Coen, the Minnesota-born brothers behind the popular film, will add to the notoriety. No timeline has been announced by the FX Network, and John Solberg, FX's senior vice president of public relations, did not return messages left by The Associated Press.

"I don't know how it can be a bad thing for us," said Charley Johnson, president and CEO of the city's convention and visitor's bureau. "People still talk about the movie all the time."

Larry Gauper, of Fargo, a retired health insurance executive, also thinks most people are looking forward to the TV show.

"There are some people who don't like us sort of being mocked or being made fun of, but I think most people really appreciate the attention Fargo gets," Gauper said.

But "Fargo" movie fan Marnie Piehl wonders if the city has changed too much ? thanks to population growth and a revitalized downtown with high-end restaurants and bars serving craft beer and organic vegetables ? that it no longer makes sense to situate the TV show here. McDormand's character would have left Fargo years ago, Piehl said.

"That may sound funny to someone from New York, but it just doesn't fit for me anymore," she said. "The North Dakota story is not the Marge Gunderson story anymore."

Though details about the plot and characters in the FX show are scant, that hasn't stopped Fargo residents from speculating about it.

Mayor Dennis Walaker said his favorite character is the sheriff, and hopes McDormand gets a prominent role. And although Rudrud's character, Macy's wife, was killed off in the movie, she joked that there might be room for her in the adaptation.

"Well, I haven't been chopped up," she said. "There's always a possibility."

Egyptian Abortion, American Choice - NYTimes.com

Most of our friends in Egypt had experienced some form of a pregnancy loss, and we knew this going in. Here, pesticide use is rumored to be responsible for the staggering number of miscarriages, birth defects and stillbirths. Still, when I became pregnant for the third time, during my husband?s first tour with the State Department and our second year living in Cairo, I was thrilled. And when I reached the end of the first trimester, we believed that we had overcome whatever the odds were. I was confident as I lay next to the ultrasound machine. I was also alone. I had done this twice before and didn?t think my husband needed to battle Cairo traffic to be there with me.

My first stretch of quiet in some time left me alone to contemplate this third child. I was showing by then and enjoying the attention of my colleagues, hotel staff and people on the street. I was given a free piece of falafel from a vendor outside. A woman on the street told me I was having a boy, the highest blessing she could have bestowed. I began, in a moment of connectedness and spirituality that hadn?t defined either of my other pregnancies, to love this child.

The technician was cold, quick and calculating with the results. There was a sac present that indicated a cystic hygroma. The cranium was too small and the heartbeat too slow. She told me that I could take two minutes to cry, then could go in to see the doctor. In her words, it was God?s will.

I told her that I was not religious. She apologized. I waited to speak with the doctor, who confirmed that the chances of a healthy baby were effectively zero. The baby would likely be stillborn in the seventh or eighth month. If carried, miraculously, to term, it would suffer from Trisomy 18, likely Down syndrome and heart failure. It did not possess a nasal bone.

As a society, we?ve characterized one type of pregnancy and one type of abortion. A woman can keep a healthy pregnancy, or terminate one that she had been forced to conceive, or that could potentially kill her. We fell outside this dichotomy. But it was within its legal framework that my husband and I accepted that to minimize trauma on my body, and on our family, we had to terminate.

I don?t believe that we didn?t make a choice. Other women may have carried to term, or as close to term as possible, a child whose condition could allow it to live for a few days, or weeks, or maybe a few years. But faced with the impossibility of this loss, we chose to face it then, before a child had the chance to win our hearts and let us hope for the impossible.

The abortion happened in Arabic and English, and I was grateful for the occasional pieces of conversation I didn?t understand. It happened in an understaffed hospital, in which I lay in bed with the fetus for 20 minutes after it was expelled, waiting for a nurse to remove it. I didn?t want to see it, and neither did my husband. That was another choice we had made. We came home that night, drank some wine and focused on my physical recovery. I rested. In the coming days, as we collected and submitted the paperwork for our insurance company, the loss of a baby that we had briefly imagined began to sink in. We had wanted the age gap and family dynamic that we had begun to believe was coming to us. We knocked off work early, and the children ? babies, really, not the oldest and middle child that my fatigued, pregnant body had come to see them as ? ate dinner with us on the couch, smeared hummus over everything and took full advantage of their space to behave as children in a household that loved them and had deeply wanted them from the start.

Then our insurance company responded. Our claim had been denied. Because the pregnancy was not the result of rape or incest and did not threaten my life, it was considered an elective procedure. We relied on federal insurance, the same plan available to all State Department employees. It?s a basic plan, adequate for our typical needs, but bound by legal restrictions concerning federal spending and abortion. We gathered the paperwork necessary to rebut their claim, but knowing its futility, began digging up $5,000 to pay for the abortion.

While the tone and content of the abortion debate has shifted and raged over the past several years, a steady 50 percent have believed that abortion should only be legal under the hardest of circumstances. My insurance company did not lie, and they didn?t make up the rules. In keeping with this moderate stance, they rejected our claim. We can, by giving up a trip home, stretching our grocery budget and ending our date nights, pay for our choice. But what?s been lost in this compromise is how tough that choice can be.

Nascar Races: Hot Tips to Car Racing

Article Body:
What to Look For While Betting on NASCAR

Auto racing such as Formula One and other races such as the Indy 2000 are big hits internationally. Millions of fans crowd stadiums to watch the different cars race by. The screech of burning tires as they spin by you is an experience that very few forget.

NASCAR is one of the largest racing organizations in the USA. With millions of fans around the country, and some of the most expensive race cars and teams put together you can see how NASCAR and betting go together like peas in a pod. But today we are going to talk about the teams crews.

The great thing about NASCAR is that it is an individual sport and a team sport at the same time. So when we start talking about sports betting, or race betting, the options that we have are spread out and full of potential, although we are going to focus on the teams part today.

Now on any given day a NASCAR driver can come back from last place and win a long and tough race. Certain things must happen for a gambler to win his bet just like certain things must happen for a circumstance like this to take place. This is where the team comes into play.

Sports betting and betting on NASCAR is and around the clock job; the teams mechanics are working on the cars days in a row to get ready for the start time, changing fuel capacities, and tuning up the engines due to weather conditions as well as fitting the correct tires to the surface. A teams crew can make all the difference on race day whether that driver will win or lose. If the car is not running at full capacity due to some over looked object that needed tweaking, the driver may lose serious horsepower from his engine and lose valuable seconds here and there on the track.

Now again in NASCAR there is so much telemetry and science that go into these cars; that the teams will drive a car all the way to the finish line burning off fumes to maybe win the race, or have the race blown because the car ran out of fuel after the last turn. The amount of gas they carry in the car determines weight, how fast the car will move under certain conditions and for how long the car will travel without needing to refuel.

This is what can make betting on NASCAR races so interesting is the amount of variables and how they change minutely due to a change in air temperature or how the sun is beating down upon the asphalt or what wind speeds from which direction.

I hope that this article helps you understand better the ins and outs of car racing in general and NASCAR races in particular. If you are not a fan, try and visit one of the tracks while a race is in progress. It will astound you. If you wish to learn more about auto racing or about the NASCAR race circuit visit http://www.gambling-portal.com/auto-racing.html and have a ball.

Aggressive ads keep abortion in campaign spotlight

NEW YORK (AP) ? Though Barack Obama and Mitt Romney rarely tackle the topic of abortion head-on, the void is being filled by rival advocacy groups targeting swing states with ads depicting one or the other candidate as an extremist in his stance on the divisive issue.

Obama, according to the National Right to Life Committee, is "the most pro-abortion president this country has ever seen." Another anti-abortion group, the Susan B. Anthony List, is running anti-Obama TV ads titled "Abortion Radical."

From the other side, groups supporting legal access to abortion, as well as the Obama campaign itself, depict Romney and his running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan, as eager to ban most abortions as part of a Republican "war on women." The GOP ticket "is extremely dangerous to women's health," says Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America.

Numerous polls indicate that abortion and other hot-button social issues aren't top priorities for most Americans as they worry about jobs and health care. Yet abortion is a visceral subject for some voters ? and the extent to which they turn out to vote, and perhaps sway wavering acquaintances, could make a difference in pivotal swing states.

There's extra intensity this year because Obama and Romney ? reflecting their party platforms ? are so polarized in regard to abortion.

Obama believes decisions about abortion should be left to women and their doctors. He affirmed this outlook during his acceptance speech at the Democratic convention, where the prime-time speakers included Keenan and Cecile Richards, president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

Romney opposes abortion except in cases of rape, incest and threat to the mother's life, and says the Supreme Court should repeal the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that established a nationwide right to abortion. He also would end federal aid to Planned Parenthood, which is a major provider of abortion and contraception.

"There are such sharp differences between the two candidates, it's not surprising the advocacy groups are so engaged," said Mark Rozell, a political science professor at George Mason University in the swing state of Virginia. "They think other voters must feel the same way."

Planned Parenthood, through its political action affiliates, has spent more on this election than any in the past ? more than $12 million, with about half the money going for TV ads in Florida, Virginia, Ohio and other battleground states.

Dawn Laguens, executive vice president of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, said a large chunk of the funds had been donated by new contributors eager to fight back against Republican efforts to restrict abortion at the state and federal level.

"People have woken up and said, 'Not only are they serious, but they're close to imposing their will on the women of America,'" Laguens said.

Among the biggest spenders on the anti-abortion side is the Susan B. Anthony List. Along with its political action committees, it has reported more than $3 million in expenditures, including TV ads in Ohio, Virginia, Florida and Colorado.

The group's president, Marjorie Dannenfelser, said the ads seek to depict Obama as an extremist in regard to abortion and to woo undecided, socially conservative Democrats, including Hispanics.

"It's hard to argue that the 'war on women' theme has stuck," Dannenfelser said. "The gender gap has closed since the first debate, and the women's vote is the most fluid I've seen."

Some of the swing states experienced controversies earlier this year that put a spotlight on abortion even before the presidential race heated up.

In Ohio, the Legislature held hearings on a bill that would impose the nation's most severe abortion restrictions, outlawing most abortions after the first detectable fetal heartbeat, which can be as early as six weeks into pregnancy. The bill stalled, but its supporters hope to revive it after the election.

Janet Folger Porter, president of the conservative advocacy group Faith2Action, is a leading backer of the so-called "heartbeat bill" and also released a video this month denouncing Obama.

"You can question where Gov. Romney stands, but there's no question where President Obama stands on life," says Porter, depicting Obama's stance as "pro-death."

Kellie Copeland, executive director of NARAL's Ohio affiliate, said debate over the heartbeat bill raised voter awareness of abortion-related issues.

"This is really on a lot of Ohioans' minds," she said. "They want to know where the candidates stand."

The issue also is figuring in Ohio's Senate race, with Democratic incumbent Sherrod Brown, a firm supporter of legal access to abortion, and Republican challenger Josh Mandel, an advocate of outlawing it.

In Virginia, there was a surge of protests earlier this year when the Republican-controlled Legislature passed a bill requiring women to undergo pre-abortion sonograms. Initially, it mandated a vaginally invasive procedure, drawing charges from female Democratic legislators that it amounted to "state mandated rape."

The provision was removed at Republican Gov. Bob McDonnell's urging after the bill was mocked on national TV comedy shows. But the controversy had staying power ? a Democratic legislative candidate in North Carolina has run a TV ad in which she brandishes a transvaginal wand in an effort to capitalize on the anti-abortion views of her GOP opponent.

Abortion also has been a prominent issue in Missouri's Senate race since Republican candidate Todd Akin ? a foe of abortion ? remarked in August that women's bodies have ways of avoiding pregnancy in instances of "legitimate rape." He later called the comment a mistake, but Democratic incumbent Claire McCaskill has aired anti-Akin ads featuring testimonials from women who said they were raped, including one who describes herself as a "pro-life" Republican.

Rozell, the George Mason professor, said the abortion debate could play a crucial role in the election even as the economy remains the paramount concern.

"The social issues do matter to a significant portion of voters, especially certain swing voters who might see a candidate's position on abortion as a marker," Rozell said. "Can they trust this candidate to govern responsibly, or is he beholden to an extreme element in his political party?"

He said Romney faces a tricky balancing act as he tries to woo middle-of-the road women without antagonizing religious conservatives who already are wary because Romney supported abortion rights in the past.

Last week, Romney told The Des Moines Register's editorial board that there wasn't any abortion-related legislation he planned to pursue as president. A spokeswoman quickly clarified his remark, and Romney told reporters: "I'll be a pro-life president."

This week, Romney's campaign released a TV ad suggesting the candidate believes abortion "should be an option" in certain cases.

In the ad, a woman says she'd heard Romney's position on abortion and birth control "seemed a bit extreme." She says she'd learned Romney doesn't oppose contraception and believes abortion should be available in cases of rape, incest or when the mother's life is at stake.

Dawn Laguens of Planned Parenthood said the ad was "designed to deceive women."

"The Romney team knows that Mitt Romney's real agenda for women's health is deeply unpopular ? ending safe and legal abortion, ending Planned Parenthood's preventive care that millions of people rely on," she said.

Yemen: Suspected US drone strikes kill 7 militants

(AP) ? Suspected U.S. drone strikes killed at least seven al-Qaida-linked militants in southern Yemen on Thursday, Yemeni security officials and witnesses said.

The officials say at least three strikes targeted a gathering of militants at a farm outside the town of Jaar, a one-time al-Qaida stronghold.

The officials say the attacks followed tips of an imminent al-Qaida attack on the town.

Resident of the area who came to the site after the attack said they saw vehicles burning, as thick black smoke billowed into the sky and explosions rocked the areas. They declined to be identified, fearing reprisals. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

Government forces deployed to the area and the number of the dead could rise since body parts were found but not counted, the officials said.

The strikes come one day after Yemen's Defense Minister Gen. Mohammed Nasser Ahmed's visited Jaar and vowed to hunt down al-Qaida militants in their hideouts.

A U.S.-backed Yemeni military offensive in June pushed out al-Qaida from many southern areas the militants seized during last year's uprising. Washington considers the terror network's Yemen branch, al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, to be its most dangerous offshoot.

Since the offensive drove them from the towns, militants have sought refuge in nearby mountain areas and retaliated with assassinations of top security and military officials as well as deadly suicide bombings.

Security officials said they believe the movement has a hit list of officials, and wants to paralyze the new government that came to power this year as a result of 2011's popular uprising.

(AP) ? A new London exhibition has brought together more than 100 Hollywood costumes, from Darth Vader's suit to the world's most famous ruby slippers.

The show, at the Victoria and Albert Museum, aims to tell the story of the process of costume design and how it helps create believable characters, curators said Tuesday.

"It's not really about the clothes ? it's really about creating an authentic individual, every time," said guest curator Deborah Landis, who has designed costumes for movies including "The Blues Brothers."

Many of cinema's most legendary outfits are here: Charlie Chaplin's baggy suit, hat and cane ensemble; Holly Golightly's black Givenchy gown in "Breakfast at Tiffany's;" Scarlett O'Hara's green velvet dress from "Gone with the Wind;" and Indiana Jones' leather jacket and fedora from "Raiders of the Lost Ark."

Among the show's highlights are Dorothy's ruby slippers and blue and white gingham pinafore from "The Wizard of Oz," which were united for the first time since the 1939 movie was filmed.

The museum's assistant curator, Keith Lodwick, said his team spent five years on a worldwide treasure hunt, borrowing the costumes from museums, collectors and film studios.

There were plenty of glamorous gowns from Hollywood's best-known screen sirens: Marilyn Monroe's white halter-neck dress from "The Seven Year Itch;" Elizabeth Taylor's floor-length cream gown in "Cleopatra;" and Barbra Streisand's purple evening dress in "Funny Girl."

But Lodwick said the exhibition also included some unusual choices to surprise viewers expecting just outlandish sci-fi outfits and elaborate period costumes.

"All movie costumes, no matter the genre, are always meticulously researched," Lodwick said.

Matt Damon's casual outfit in the "Bourne Identity" action movies, for example, may "look just like a jacket and shirt, but it was meant to make him disappear into a crowd," he said.

The exhibition opens Saturday and runs until Jan. 27.

Video: Back pain relief from an unlikely place

>>> by one estimate, 80% of us complain of back pain. it's a problem so chronic for people, they've run out of solutions that at least conventional medicine can offer them. as we've been asking in our series, what is the alternative. our report tonight from dr. nancy snyderman .

>> reporter: kathy is playing music again. a small but significant sign that her days of agonizing back pain are over.

>> i'm feeling much more hopeful.

>> reporter: when two surgeries failed to reduce the excruciating nerve pain shooting down her legs commonly called sciatica, she turned to technology and a device called a spinal cord stimulater.

>> i can increase or decrease the intensity.

>> reporter: the goal, pain relief , and reduce dependency on powerful painkillers. neurostimulation has come a long way.

>> once we get the stimulation into the right area, we finetune it.

>> reporter: implanted under the skin of the lower back, the device lets the patient control the amount of electrical current traveling to the nerves.

>> they can't get adequate relief with nerve pain medications, that's the time to think about a spinal cord stimula stimulater.

>> the spinal cord stimulater is just one step in resuming an active lifestyle . kathy is complimenting her recovery with regular workouts.

>> that strength is pulling out of your legs.

>> reporter: mira teaches her technique called gyrotonic. one of a variety of strengthening and breathing methods that is important to maintaining back health.

>> it's important to get your muscles strong beforehand. if it's an accident you haven't planned for, get the body moving as quickly as possible.

>> reporter: other treatments for back pain, acupuncture. mounting evidence suggests it is a viable early option for stimulating the body's natural painkillers.

>> you get this brain activity that releases endorphins and just the release into the body has numerous physiological effects that can help with stress, sleep, pain relief .

>> reporter: in the case of the stimulaters, the surgery takes two and a half hours, the device stays in for life and the battery is replaced every ten years. good news, the risks are minimal and this is covered by insurance. doctors want patients to be pain free and off narcotics.

Long-term observations in the tropics linked to global climate change

ScienceDaily (Oct. 16, 2012) ? Reports of declining ice coverage and drowning polar bears in the Arctic illustrate dramatic ecosystem responses to global climate change in Earth's polar regions. But in this first-ever account of a long-term project in the southern Caribbean, a Stony Brook professor and his colleagues report in this week's Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences that tropical ecosystems are also affected by global climatic trends -- and with accompanying economic impacts.

In an article entitled, "Ecosystem responses in the southern Caribbean Sea to global climate change," Dr. Gordon Taylor and colleagues from Stony Brook University's School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS), as well as the University of South Florida, University of South Carolina and two Venezuelan institutions (EDIMAR, Fundaci?n de la Salle de Ciencias Naturales and Universidad de Oriente) provide an analysis of 14 years of continuous monthly oceanographic observations in the southern Caribbean off the coast of Venezuela. The research, known as the CARIACO Ocean Time-Series Program, has been continually funded by the National Science Foundation since 1995.

The researchers report how the complex food web overlying the Cariaco Basin has changed in this relatively short time frame. Microscopic plankton production has steadily declined and the species of plants supporting the food web have shifted. These ecosystem changes have affected the way this region exchanges carbon dioxide (CO2) with the atmosphere and, in part, caused local sardine fisheries to collapse and thus have a negative impact on Margarita Island economy.

The researchers link these ecosystem changes to declining upwelling of nutrient-rich waters caused by weakening Trade Winds in the region and an average sea surface warming of 1?C during their observations. According to the authors, all these changes trace back to the global heat budget, corresponding to climatic shifts in well-known indices of atmospheric circulation. This is the first report to link long-term, shipboard time-series oceanographic and local meteorological observations in the Tropics with global scale climatic changes.

The CARIACO Ocean Time-Series Program is currently funded by NSF to continue monthly sampling until the end of 2013 and has a five-year renewal proposal pending. "We will continue with the same measurements," said Dr. Taylor. "This also includes looking at ocean acidification, molecular characterization of microbial communities and cycling of major elements."

The Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Is Motor Trend's SUV Of The Year ...

Motor Trend has named the 2013 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class the 2013 SUV of the Year. Remember, we live in an era where the SUVs of yore, the International Harvesters and K-5 Blazers and even the Ford Explorer, are dinosaur relics of a bygone era, the automotive equivalent of Victorian bodybuilders with triangle weights. Google Brings Call Reporting To AdWords Express For Small ...

Google just made it a lot easier for small businesses to track phone calls generated by their AdWords Express ads. For two years now, the full version of AdWords has allowed businesses to track phone calls by using the technology behind Google Voice to create unique phone numbers for every campaign. Starting today, AdWords Express, the somewhat simplified version of AdWords that?s geared specifically toward small businesses, will also offer this feature.

With call reporting turned on, Google will replace a business? phone number with a toll-free Google number. Calls to this number will be automatically forwarded to the business? local number and Google will start collecting basic analytics data for these calls.

For small businesses, this means that they can now easily track the performance of an important aspect of their ads that wasn?t previously accessible to them. In addition, this will also help businesses better evaluate the ROI of their AdWord campaigns.

For Google, of course, these calls also generate some revenue. Manually dialed calls completed to the Google forwarding number will cost $1 each. For users who use Google?s click-to-call feature on their mobile devices, Google will charge the same price as for a regular mobile search ad click. In the future, Google noted last year, it may also allow businesses to place bids for more expensive calls to influence their ad position, but the company hasn?t followed up on this yet.

As Google notes in today?s announcement, ?when people search for local businesses on Google, they may want to check out a website, but there?s a good chance they?ll want to just give you a call.? This may be a quaint notion for those of us who expect every business to have up-to-date websites with all the information we could ever ask for over the phone. For small businesses ? and especially the ones most likely to use AdWords Express to drum up extra business ? this is definitely a reality.
