When rules change, brain falters

ScienceDaily (July 30, 2012) ? For the human brain, learning a new task when rules change can be a surprisingly difficult process marred by repeated mistakes, according to a new study by Michigan State University psychology researchers.

Imagine traveling to Ireland and suddenly having to drive on the left side of the road. The brain, trained for right-side driving, becomes overburdened trying to suppress the old rules while simultaneously focusing on the new rules, said Hans Schroder, primary researcher on the study.

"There's so much conflict in your brain," said Schroder, "that when you make a mistake like forgetting to turn on your blinker you don't even realize it and make the same mistake again. What you learned initially is hard to overcome when rules change."

The study, in the research journal Cognitive, Affective & Behavioral Neuroscience, is one of the first to show how the brain responds to mistakes that occur after rules change.

Study participants were given a computer task that involved recognizing the middle letter in strings such as "NNMNN" or "MMNMM." If "M" was in the middle, they were to press the left button; if "N" was in the middle, they were to press the right. After 50 trials, the rules were reversed so the participants had to press the right button if "M" was in the middle and the left if "N" was in the middle.

Participants made more repeated errors when the rules were reversed, meaning they weren't learning from their mistakes. In addition, a cap measuring brain activity showed they were less aware of their errors. When participants did respond correctly after the rules changed, their brain activity showed they had to work harder than when they were given the first set of rules.

"We expected they were going to get better at the task over time," said Schroder, a graduate student in MSU's Department of Psychology. "But after the rules changed they were slower and less accurate throughout the task and couldn't seem to get the hang of it."

Continually making these mistakes in the work environment can lead to frustration, exhaustion and even anxiety and depression, said Jason Moser, assistant professor of psychology and director of MSU's Clinical Psychophysiology Lab.

"These findings and our past research suggest that when you have multiple things to juggle in your mind -- essentially, when you are multitasking -- you are more likely to mess up," Moser said. "It takes effort and practice for you to be more aware of the mistakes you are missing and stay focused."

In addition to Schroder and Moser, co-researchers include Erik Altmann, associate professor of psychology, and master's student Tim Moran.

Taylor 'relishing' South Africa challenge

James Taylor is "relishing" the prospect of facing South Africa's bowling attack at Headingley having been called into the squad for the second Test but is not taking his debut for granted.

Unless England change the balance of their side and play five bowlers, which is unlikely, Taylor will earn his first cap at No. 6 after Ravi Bopara became unavailable due to personal reasons shortly before the squad was named on Sunday morning.

Taylor, who has been captain of England Lions over the last two years and averages 61.60 from ten first-class matches for them, has long been earmarked as a Test batsman in waiting. But he had seemingly fallen down the pecking order at the start of this season after failing to secure a place in the extended England performance squad and Jonny Bairstow was chosen to replace an injured Bopara against West Indies.

However, Taylor led the Lions against the West Indians in May and scored an impressive century at Derby and this week hit his first Championship hundred for his new county, Nottinghamshire, against Sussex. It is actually Taylor's one-day form that has been more consistent and he has made 345 runs at 69 in the CB40.

"Facing South Africa's bowling attack is always going to be a tough challenge but it's something that I would relish because getting an England Test call has been my aim from the word go," he said. "Test cricket is the pinnacle but there was a noticeable step up to division one of the Championship and wickets haven't been easy to bat on this season

"I've always backed myself to play at the highest level and even though I'm young I've played a lot of cricket and I've got a lot of runs behind me. The next goal is to get a place in the eleven and if I get that opportunity I have to take it with both hands. If I get in the team then I have to work hard to get runs and then work harder again to do that consistently.

"I've always tried to keep my feet on the ground and strive to become a better player and that will always be my mantra."

Taylor's move from Leicestershire to Nottinghamshire for this season was with the aim of boosting his Test ambitions after getting a brief taste of international cricket last season against Ireland. He has now jumped back ahead of Bairstow while fighting off the challenge of Eoin Morgan and Nick Compton.

"I hoped that I would be next in line but I never took anything for granted although I have scored consistent runs in all forms of the game to earn this chance," he said. "Playing at Headingley would be a very proud moment for me but nothing has happened yet, I'm just one step closer and waiting for the nod and the opportunity to help England to get back into the series.

Interactive proofs: Ten-year-old problem in theoretical computer science falls

ScienceDaily (July 30, 2012) ? Interactive proofs, which MIT researchers helped pioneer, have emerged as one of the major research topics in theoretical computer science. In the classic interactive proof, a questioner with limited computational power tries to extract reliable information from a computationally powerful but unreliable respondent. Interactive proofs are the basis of cryptographic systems now in wide use, but for computer scientists, they're just as important for the insight they provide into the complexity of computational problems.

Twenty years ago, researchers showed that if the questioner in an interactive proof is able to query multiple omniscient respondents -- which are unable to communicate with each other -- it can extract information much more efficiently than it could from a single respondent. As quantum computing became a more popular research topic, however, computer scientists began to wonder whether such multiple-respondent -- or "multiprover" -- systems would still work if the respondents were able to perform measurements on physical particles that were "entangled," meaning that their quantum properties were dependent on each other.

At the IEEE Symposium on Foundations of Computer Science in October, Thomas Vidick, a postdoc at MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, and Tsuyoshi Ito, a researcher at NEC Labs in Princeton, N.J., finally answer that question: Yes, there are multiprover interactive proofs that hold up against entangled respondents. That answer is good news for cryptographers, but it's bad news for quantum physicists, because it proves that there's no easy way to devise experiments that illustrate the differences between classical and quantum physical systems.

It's also something of a surprise, because when the question was first posed, it was immediately clear that some multiprover proofs were not resilient against entanglement. Vidick and Ito didn't devise the proof whose resilience they prove, but they did develop new tools for analyzing it.

In an interactive proof, a questioner asks a series of questions, each of which constrains the range of possible answers to the next question. The questioner doesn't have the power to compute valid answers itself, but it does have the power to determine whether each new answer meets the constraints imposed by the previous ones. After enough questions, the questioner will either expose a contradiction or reduce the probability that the respondent is cheating to near zero.

Multiprover proofs are so much more efficient than single-respondent proofs because none of the respondents knows the constraints imposed by the others' answers. Consequently, contradictions are much more likely if any respondent tries to cheat.

But if the respondents have access to particles that are entangled with each other -- say, electrons that were orbiting the same atom but were subsequently separated -- they can perform measurements -- of, say, the spins of select electrons -- that will enable them to coordinate their answers. That's enough to thwart some interactive proofs.

The proof that Vidick and Ito analyzed is designed to make cheating difficult by disguising the questioner's intent. To get a sense of how it works, imagine a graph that in some sense plots questions against answers, and suppose that the questioner is interested in two answers, which would be depicted on the graph as two points. Instead of asking the two questions of interest, however, the questioner asks at least three different questions. If the answers to those questions fall on a single line, then so do the answers that the questioner really cares about, which can now be calculated. If the answers don't fall on a line, then at least one of the respondents is trying to cheat.

"That's basically the idea, except that you do it in a much more high-dimensional way," Vidick says. "Instead of having two dimensions, you have 'N' dimensions, and you think of all the questions and answers as being a small, N-dimensional cube."

This type of proof turns out to be immune to quantum entanglement. But demonstrating that required Vidick and Ito to develop a new analytic framework for multiprover proofs.

According to the weird rules of quantum mechanics, until a measurement is performed on a quantum particle, the property being measured has no definite value; measuring snaps the particle into a definite state, but that state is drawn randomly from a probability distribution of possible states.

The problem is that, when particles are entangled, their probability distributions can't be treated separately: They're really part of a single big distribution. But any mathematical description of that distribution supposes a bird's-eye perspective that no respondent in a multiprover proof would have. Finding a way to do justice to both the connection between the measurements and the separation of the measurers proved enormously difficult. "It took Tsuyoshi and me about a year and a half," Vidick says. "But in fact, one could say I've been working on this since 2006. My very first paper was on exactly the same topic."

Delta shuts down Comair; workers given notice

Delta Air Lines is shutting down its shrunken, 35-year-old regional carrier Comair at the end of September as it switches to bigger jets and it is sending termination notices to its 1,700 remaining employees.

  1. Don't miss these Travel stories

    1. New vacation necessity: professional photographer?

With friends and family increasingly scrutinizing vacation photos via Facebook, some travelers are hiring professional photographers to capture lasting memories of their trip.

    5. Slideshow: London calling

Comair is down to 290 flights a day. More than 1,000 Comair employees are in the Cincinnati and northern Kentucky region, some 700 of those in Kentucky.

Comair has slashed its fleet, flights and workforce in the last seven years. Delta said the smaller regional planes are expensive to fly because they are not as fuel-efficient and cost more to maintain as the fleet ages.

"We just really couldn't get the cost structure to where we wanted to get it," said Don Bornhorst, senior vice president of Delta Connection and a former Comair president. "It ultimately was a cost issue; it wasn't a quality issue with Comair. They're a good airline, great employees, very innovative ... we just could not solve the cost issues."

Delta, based in Atlanta, had about 500 of the 50-seat regional jets in 2008 and plans to reduce that to 125 within two years. Most of that flying will be done by new 76-seat jets as well as the 117-seat Boeing 717sthat Delta is leasing from Southwest Airlines.

Delta said Friday that it has stopped flying 16 of the remaining Comair 50-seaters, and will lease the carrier's other 28 planes to other operators. Bornhorst said employees have 60-day termination notices. A small group of employees will remain after the Sept. 29 shutdown to handle details of the closure.

Comair handles only about 1 percent of Delta's flying, so the closure won't result in significant changes to Delta's network. Delta also said it won't mean fewer flights out of Comair's base at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport. Besides Cincinnati, Comair also has hubs in Detroit and at New York's JFK and LaGuardia airports.

Comair was founded in 1977, flying three propeller-driven Piper Navajo aircraft. It started operating as Delta Connection in 1984 and became a wholly owned subsidiary of Delta in 2000. Comair helped expand the regional jet business when it began flying Bombardier CRJ jets.

"As you can imagine, we're all very sad," said Lynn Dziad, spokeswoman for the Teamsters local that represents more than 400 flight attendants. She marked her 22nd anniversary with Comair just last week. "It's been a wonderful company. A lot of incredible people have worked here."

Kentucky's governor, Steve Beshear, said the Delta action is a blow to the region because of the job losses, and the Democrat called it "terribly disappointing." Kentucky will try to help affected workers, he said in a statement.

"Today's announcement is sad news for Cincinnati, as 300 southwest Ohio families will be looking for new opportunities as Comair ceases operations," Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, a Republican from the Cincinnati area, said in a statement. He said he has pressed Delta to offer opportunities for impacted workers. He added that Delta has committed to keeping up its Cincinnati area schedule, "which is important for Cincinnati's business community as they look for opportunities to grow and build their businesses across the nation and the world."

Aviation analyst Mike Boyd of The Boyd Group said he expected the Comair shutdown, because the regional airline business doesn't work anymore.

"It's not going to turn around," Boyd said. "Delta is quite correctly saying 'We've got to get rid of these uneconomic airlines.' "

Before entering bankruptcy protection in September 2005, Comair had more than 7,000 employees and 1,160 flights. Comair and Delta emerged from bankruptcy reorganization in April 2007.

Forty-nine people were killed when Comair Flight 5191 crashed on Aug. 27, 2006 in a field near Blue Grass Airport in Lexington, Ky., after trying to take off from a runway that was too short for commercial jets. The National Transportation Safety Board found the pilots failed to notice they were on the wrong runway.

Delta had talked to prospective buyers for Comair, without success. It sold its other regional airlines ? Compass and Mesaba ? in 2010. Those carriers still operate flights for Delta, as do several other companies.

Shares of Delta Air Lines Inc. rose 3 cents to $9.44 in afternoon trading Friday.

JustFab logoAnother big round of funding in the currently-chic area of online retail and fashion: JustFab, the online shoe/fashion brand and styling platform with six million members, has raised $76 million, funding that it will use to go big on international expansion. The Series B Round was led by new investor Rho Ventures, with participation from existing backers Matrix Partners, Technology Crossover Ventures (TCV) and Intelligent Beauty, JustFab's parent company, which incubated and launched the startup in 2010. The total amount of money now raised by JustFab is $139 million. After a launch in Germany earlier this year that went "significantly better than we expected," co-CEO Adam Goldenberg tells me that the main priority right now is to continue that international expansion to one of the biggest fashion markets in Europe. "We are launching in the UK in September," he tells me, with more markets to be added by the first quarter of 2013. Currently, he says, JustFab is adding half a million users every month, and is on track to make $100 million in revenue this year -- a big leap on the $28 million of 2011 -- on a business model that mixes a subscription-based user-base with other users buying a la carte.

NASA's Curiosity rover to explore bizarre Martian mountain (+video)

The three-mile-tall Mount Sharp is an inviting target for investigation by NASA's one-ton Mars rover, which is scheduled to touch down on the Red Planet on Aug. 5.

By Mike Wall,?SPACE.com / July 25, 2012

NASA's 1-ton Curiosity rover will land in August 2012 near the foot of Mount Sharp inside Mars' Gale Crater.

The towering mountain that NASA's next Mars rover will explore after landing on the Red Planet next month remains mysterious to scientists, who say there's nothing quite like it here on Earth.

Mount Sharp rises 3 miles (5 kilometers) from the center of Mars' huge Gale Crater, where the car-size?Curiosity rover?will touch down on the night of Aug. 5. Curiosity scientists are eager to study the mountain, whose many layers preserve a record of the Red Planet's changing environmental conditions going back perhaps a billion years or more.

Curiosity's rovings could also help the team understand how?Mount Sharp?formed, because they're not entirely sure.

"In one go, you have flat-lying strata that are 5 kilometers thick. There's nothing like that on Earth," said Curiosity lead scientist John Grotzinger, of Caltech in Pasadena. "We don't really know what's going on there." [Curiosity - The SUV of Mars Rovers]

Exploring Mount Sharp

The 1-ton Curiosity rover is the centerpiece of NASA's $2.5 billion Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) mission, which launched in late November. MSL's main goal is to determine if the?Gale Crater?area is, or ever was, capable of supporting microbial life.

To get at this question, Curiosity will investigate the different layers of Mount Sharp, which is taller than any peak in the continental United States.

Life as we know it depends on liquid water. So the rover will probably spend a lot of time poking around Mount Sharp's lower reaches, where?Mars-orbiting spacecraft have spotted signs of minerals that form in the presence of water, such as clays and sulfates.

But there are reasons to climb higher. If Curiosity gets about 2,300 feet (700 meters) up the mountain, for example, it will cross a boundary, encountering layers that don't show signs of hydrated minerals. Higher still are strata that appear to have been deposited by the wind in a rhythmic pattern, perhaps indicating climate cycles, Grotzinger said.

Studying these higher layers could help scientists better understand why Mars shifted from a relatively wet world billions of years ago to the dry and desolate planet we know today ? a transition marked by what Grotzinger dubbed the "Great Desiccation Event."

AAA Texas on Thursday reported the average price at the pump has reached $3.36 per gallon. The nationwide cost of gasoline rose by a nickel to hit $3.49 per gallon.

The travel association says Dallas has the most expensive gasoline statewide, at $3.40 per gallon. El Paso has the cheapest gasoline this week, at $3.17 per gallon.

AAA says gasoline prices have gone up in recent weeks but Texas drivers are still paying about 25 cents less than a year ago.

Global crude oil prices have increased in the past month.

Tips That Will Help You Build Your Muscles | energyratercourses.com

The people on the cover of fitness magazines are always good lucking and in great shape, but is it really possible for you to look like that, too? Perfection might be an unrealistic goal, but you can certainly increase your muscle mass and make your body look better than it does now. The following article will give you the information you need to get started on building your muscles.

Make a smart workout schedule. This can help you build muscle while avoiding injury. Anyone new to building muscle should probably work out only twice weekly, while veteran exercisers can move up to three, and even four, times a week.

You don?t need to get ripped to build muscle. When it comes to choosing a fitness routine to build muscles, there are many choices. Consider each one carefully before committing. If you wish to gain serious muscle mass, you may need to use protein or other supplements in addition to your workouts.

TIP! Use as many sets and repetitions as possible in each training session. You want to complete tasks like fifteen lifts and take a minute or less break in between.

Try to eat between 20 and 30 grams of protein during each meal. This will help you eat enough protein every day to build your muscles. When you spread your protein intake out throughout the day, you can more easily reach your goals. For instance, if you require 200 grams of daily protein, eating five meals with 40 grams each will meet your requirement total.

Remember carbs when you want to build muscles. Carbs are vital for energy so that you can last an entire workout, and if you do not get enough, your body converts your stored protein for energy instead. Eat the correct amount of carbohydrates to get your body through its workout.

Once you have completed exercising a certain muscle group, make sure you are stretching those muscles. Doing this will result in muscles that recover faster. While stretching may prove a bit uncomfortable, it is quite beneficial when it comes to developing new muscle tissue.

You may want to try a creatine supplement if you are interested in building muscle as an adult. Creatine not only bulks your body up, but it also helps you to maintain your energy level. This supplement has been popular in the weight lifting community for quite some time. If you are in high school and your body is not done growing, you need to stay away from all supplements

Be careful to keep your muscle building goals reasonable when you begin your program. Your best results are achieved gradually over time, through working out hundreds of times. Attempting to achieve rapid muscle building by utilizing steroids, stimulants or any kind of dangerous product, increases the risk of bodily harm and potentially severe health consequences.

If you?re beginning muscle building, perfect the form prior to powering it. You will use heavier weights over time, and by using improper form you could have diminished results later on. This can lead to injuries which will sideline you for months.

Try to focus on multiple muscles during one workout, such as the hamstrings for quads and chest dips for the chest. This practice alternates the stress placed on the two groups, so that one rests while the other one works. You can increase the intensity of your workout to make up for spending less time in the gym.

TIP! Balance is key when it comes to building muscle. Working too hard can cause just as many problems as neglecting your muscles.

You have to watch your calories, if you?re going to build muscle. Caloric intake can be both good and bad, meaning you should be mindful of what dietary elements are successful or detrimental towards muscle growth. When you do not make smart food choices in the number of calories you consume, you will not build muscle; instead, you are more likely to gain fat.

Perfection might not be within your grasp yet, but you can already demonstrate amazing dedication. The first steps is in arming yourself with the knowledge to succeed. The fact that you just spent the time reading this says that you are ready to make the changes that will improve your life forever. That is an awesome step in the right direction, so ensure that you keep what you?ve learned in mind and put it to use as soon as possible

Kohistani strikes blow for Afghan women

While most Olympic athletes are backed by strong support in their home countries, Afghanistan's Tahmina Kohistani has encountered not just disapproval, but outright opposition.

But the 100m sprinter said her appearance at the London Olympics, as her country's only female athlete, was important not just for her, but for all women in conservative Afghanistan.

"This means a lot for me and my country. There were a lot of people who were trying to disturb me, to stop me from training, but I am here," she said on Tuesday.

"A lot of people will be watching me," she added. "Being a Muslim female athlete is most important for me.

"I represent a country where every day there are suicide bomb blasts. It is important that a girl from such a country can be here."

Kohistani, 23, from the north-eastern province of Kapisa, admits it would be a "miracle" to reach the 100m final, let alone claim a medal.

The 1.60m (five foot three) runner, instantly recognisable on the track by her traditional headscarf, has a personal best of 15.0sec -- more than four seconds slower than the late Florence Griffith-Joyner's long-standing world record.

The slow time is not surprising given Kohistani comes from a country with few facilities, where many people are openly hostile to the involvement of women in sport.

She is part of a six-strong Afghan team in London including Rohullah Nikpai, whose taekwondo bronze at Beijing 2008 was the war-ravaged, deeply religious country's first ever Olympic medal.

"I know that having a medal at the Olympics is very difficult, but I am here to open a new way for the women of Afghanistan because in my society there is no sport for females," Kohistani said.

"My people do not accept sport for women, they think sport is not good for them, but my family supports me and they have no problems."

And Kohistani, who will take part in the 100m heats on August 3, holds out the faint hope that a slip-up by her rivals could open the way to a place in the final.

"It is all in the mind. The race is fast. If any of the favourites make a mistake, maybe it will be a miracle for me," she said.

Civics lesson from Justice O?Connor: Obama?s health-care remarks ?unusual?

Retired Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, testifying in the Senate about her national online iCivics project, was drawn into the lingering controversy over health care. She called criticism of Justice Roberts 'unfortunate' and Obama's remarks aimed at the court 'unusual.'

Former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O?Connor told a Senate panel Wednesday that criticism of Chief Justice John Robert?s role in upholding President Obama?s health-care reform law was ?unfortunate.?

The retired justice also said Mr. Obama?s actions were ?unusual? when he criticized the justices in his 2010 State of the Union address and when he issued a warning to the Supreme Court this spring that any decision striking down his health-care reform law would be illegitimate judicial activism.

?If there is a pending decision at the Supreme Court and the president were to express views along those lines ? it would be unusual,? Justice O?Connor said.

?We have tended in this country to not speak out about a decision in a pending case,? she added. ?It can happen, but it is not expected and not ideal.?

O?Connor made the comments while appearing as a lone witness before the Senate Judiciary Committee. She was present primarily to discuss a nationwide project called iCivics that she organized to foster greater understanding among students about how US government and American courts work.

Despite that mission, O?Connor was nonetheless drawn into the lingering controversy surrounding last month?s high court decision upholding the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

The committee chairman, Sen. Patrick Leahy (D) of Vermont, opened the door with a comment about how ?a member of the court was labeled a traitor and accused of betraying the president who appointed him.?

O?Connor replied: ?It is unfortunate because comments like that demonstrate a lack of understanding about the role of the judicial branch.?

Leahy?s reference was to Chief Justice Roberts, who reportedly changed sides during behind-the-scenes deliberations and joined the court?s liberal wing to uphold the health-care law rather than strike it down.

Angry conservatives accused Roberts of bowing to political pressure, including warnings that Obama would launch political attacks against the Supreme Court ? and Roberts in particular ? as part of his reelection campaign.

In addition to the president, Senator Leahy himself targeted Roberts in a Senate floor speech in May ? a month and a half before the decision was announced.

?I trust that he [Roberts] will be a chief justice for all of us and that he has a strong institutional sense of the proper role of the judicial branch,? Leahy said. ?The conservative activism of recent years has not been good for the court. Given the ideological challenge to the Affordable Care Act and the extensive, supportive precedent, it would be extraordinary for the Supreme Court not to defer to Congress in this matter that so clearly affects interstate commerce.?

As children we are taught in schools, churches and by our parents, how to enter into relationships We learned how to meet people and to play by the rules of dating and partnering as seen exclusively by the heterosexual population As gay and lesbian people we learn about heterosexism, the belief that heterosexuality is superior to homosexuality, and we learn to integrate that belief even if subconsciously into our lives With those beliefs accepted, we as adults continue to mimic heterosexual systems and attempt to mold ourselves into the straight norms and therefore we have bowed to Matchcom, Chemistrycom and the like As children we are not taught how to seek out and enter into gay relationships Many of us learned about gay people through unsavory rumors, hearsay and often from tasteless jokes from our friends and piers We learned to meet others by sneaking around in unsafe and unhealthy places Parks, public restrooms, bars and dark streets have long been knowsn as meeting places and pickup sites for gay people, especially gay men For decades gay and lesbian people have had limited options for meeting people and therefore, we\'ve learned to create relationships and find intimacy through often non-traditional means Many people believe that with the internet boom of the 90\'s, that gays led the charge in the development of online meetings, pickups, hookup sites and even the advent of online pornography American online, Prodigy (yes I remember Prodigy), and others owe much of their early revenue sources and development capitol to gay people who used their services to avoid the usual \"non-traditional\" avenues These models became so successful that we have dropped the ball on building even better resources and options We have as LGBT people defined our own paths by which we date and build relationships With the lack of discussion and the climate of inclusion in our upbringing, we have made the best of a bad situation and we\'ve created our own solutions and we have written our own rules This is why these \"other\" dating and relationship building sites, simply don\'t make the cut

Alphey provides the LGBT population with an option for developing real and substantial relationships through honest analysis and compatibility matching Science, psychology and technology are utilized to achieve these With the unfortunate lack of reasonable options for gay and lesbian singles Through deliberate direction, management and operation, Alphey Women For Womencom is becoming the leader and role model for bringing Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans-gender individuals together and thereby adding to the strength and social structure of the gay and lesbian community

Relationship and introduction sites are often confused with hook-up sites We use science and psychological elements to provide members with enough information and sufficient background to introduce them to other members with whom they should find enough in common to build or at least begin to build a foundation These tools are oriented towards LGBT psychology and environments Our members only have access to members they are matched to The introduction page that a matched member is presented with includes a personality profile a comparison to the matches profile and the members summary, it goes beyond sexual propensities Hook up sites simply provide access to large database with ads from members looking for quick sexual hook ups

LGBT people have many layers and we have distinct ways that we define ourselves and our gender Gay men range from ultra masculine to the majority who are pretty mainstream to very feminine These issues are not addressed in the mainstream shared sites The same can be said for gay women Gender identity issues are not mentioned or addressed on Matchcom There are different levels of physical attractions that are influenced by factors that Chemistrycom would never talk about There are issues that some people in the LGBT community would find important that these \"mainstream\" sites don\'t consider men for men HIV/Aids status is an important issue with many gay people Alphey provides these options if they are wanted Not all gay men would be inclined to date a transvestite, but some would Not all gay women would want to date any type of women We address dating and matching issues for trans-gender people as well Mainstream sites wouldn\'t even begin to consider addressing these issues But they are happy take money from LGBT people and they offer very little in the way of real service

Now more than ever, marriage equality and LGBT relationships are in the public debate Those who oppose us, those who would deny us equality look at some of our \' queer\' behavior and they judge us To some people, the way we present ourselves to the public is considered as unacceptable behavior The reality is, we in the LGBT community have identified and created our own place or niche We have defined ourselves despite the criticism that we face Some of these criticisms have served to strengthen us and by these we have defined ourselves men for men But, how are we at building strong and meaningful relationships? We aren\'t taught in our homes Who are our role models who are our teachers?? The Bars, the Chat lines and Gaycom

Alpheycom is about men and women who identify as LGBTQ We are about building relationships and strengthening our community We are for building our families as we choose to define them Here in in Salt Lake City we have our own unique flavor of intolerance and religious persecution Some feel that we are on the front lines of battle for marriage equality so, what better place to bring Alphey to the population

'No excuse' for not turning tide on AIDS: expert

Science has given the world "no excuse" to resist bold action to cut the spread of the 30-year AIDS pandemic, said a top US expert at the opening of the International AIDS Conference on Sunday.

This year's meeting, themed "Turning the Tide Together," is the world's largest gathering on HIV/AIDS and is expected to draw 25,000 people, including politicians, scientists, celebrities and activists.

High-profile appearances at the six-day event include Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former president Bill Clinton, former first lady Laura Bush, singer Elton John and actress Whoopi Goldberg.

President Barack Obama has faced some criticism for his decision not to attend in person. He is sending a video message and will invite some attendees to the White House for talks on Thursday, a top health official said.

Many experts have spoken of their optimism in the days leading up to the event. But Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said the pace of progress must accelerate.

"The fact remains that right now, today, in the summer of 2012, 31 years after the first cases were reported, there is no excuse scientifically to say we cannot do it," Fauci said.

"What we need now is the political, organizational and individual will to implement what science has given us."

Fauci cited the recent UNAIDS report released last week that showed there were 2.5 million new infections worldwide in 2011, down from 2.7 million in the prior report.

"But that makes the slope look like that," he said, holding out a flat hand. "That is unacceptable."

Among the tools that scientists have include trials that show treatment can reduce the risk of transmitting the virus to others, and antiretroviral drugs that, when taken by healthy people, can help reduce their risk of becoming infected.

Also on opening day, an international group of scientists called for all adults who test positive for HIV to be treated with antiretroviral drugs right away rather than waiting for their immune systems to weaken.

The recommendations by the International Antiviral Society are the first by a global group to make such a call.

Other major groups, such as the World Health Organization, currently urge treatment after the disease progresses to a certain point, or when the body's T-cells, or CD4 count, reaches or falls below the level of 350 cells/mm3.

"These guidelines are aspirational," said Melanie Thompson, a doctor with the AIDS Research Consortium of Atlanta, urging increased testing and better care of those who test positive for HIV.

Some 34 million people in the world are living with HIV, according to the latest UNAIDS report issued last week. However, about one in five people are not aware of their status and are most at risk of spreading the disease.

Some eight million people in low and middle income countries are now on antiretroviral treatment, making up about half of those in the world who need it, the UNAIDS report said.

Asked by a reporter if the guidelines were realistic in the current global cash-crunch environment, Thompson replied: "I actually reject the idea that there is not enough money for care and for drugs for antiretroviral therapy.

"I think it is a matter of political will. I think it is a matter of prioritizing and recognizing that treatment of HIV is cost-effective. It may be cost-saving as well," she said.

"The science should drive the allocation of resources and guidelines can play an important role in that respect."

Held every two years, the conference has returned to the United States for the first time since 1990, after being kept away by laws that barred people with HIV from traveling to the country.

The US ban was formally lifted in 2009. On Sunday, chief executives of more than 20 multinational corporations, including Coca-Cola and Richard Branson's Virgin Group, called on 46 countries to lift restrictions on travelers who are HIV positive.

Philanthropist Bill Gates was honored with the Award of Courage by the American Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR) late Saturday. Gates has committed more than $2.5 billion in HIV grants to organizations around the world, including amfAR.

"We have many potential game-changers that are bringing us closer to the end of AIDS," he said.

"What's important is to remember that we can continue to make these breakthroughs if we stay committed," Gates added.

The hunt for a cure, which has eluded scientists, will be another hot topic. HIV co-discoverer and Nobel laureate Francoise Barre-Sinoussi announced on Thursday a new roadmap for scientists in research toward a cure.

Funding, too, is at a critical juncture, with many nations boosting their domestic spending on the disease while international donations remain flat.

Total worldwide investment in HIV was $16.8 billion last year, an 11 percent rise from 2010, but still far short of the $22-24 billion needed by 2015, according to UNAIDS.

Google+Facebook+iPhone: Google Corporate IT Builds Before Buying

Bucking the corporate practice of buying instead of building internally, Google's corporate IT department will typically build management software itself, or adopt an open source software package, before investigating the feasibility of purchasing proprietary software.

"In the long run, it is cheaper to build and not buy," said Justin McWilliams, a software engineer in Google's corporate engineering department, which provisions and manages computers and other technology for Google employees. McWilliams shared some of the company's practices at the O'Reilly Open Source Conference (OSCON), being held this week in Portland, Oregon. "We typically don't default to buying a commercial offering. We think about building it from scratch first, or look to the open source world," he said.

Google uses a number of home-built or modified open source programs for IT management, including software for full disk encryption (FDE), remote computer management, compliance management, virtual private networks (VPN), video teleconferencing, and for single sign on (SSO).

Over the past few decades, IT departments at large organizations have learned to purchase commercial, off-the-shelf software to manage their infrastructure, typically because it is less expensive than writing and maintaining the software in-house. Due to a number of factors, however, this approach does not work well at Google, McWilliams explained.
