Study links quality of mother-toddler relationship to teen obesity

Tuesday, December 27, 2011

The quality of the emotional relationship between a mother and her young child could affect the potential for that child to be obese during adolescence, a new study suggests.

Researchers analyzed national data detailing relationship characteristics between mothers and their children during their toddler years. The lower the quality of the relationship in terms of the child's emotional security and the mother's sensitivity, the higher the risk that a child would be obese at age 15 years, according to the analysis.

Among those toddlers who had the lowest-quality emotional relationships with their mothers, more than a quarter were obese as teens, compared to 13 percent of adolescents who had closer bonds with their mothers in their younger years.

The findings mirror previous research by these scientists that showed toddlers who did not have a secure emotional relationship with their parents were at increased risk for obesity by age 4 ?. This body of work suggests the areas of the brain that control emotions and stress responses, as well as appetite and energy balance, could be working together to influence the likelihood that a child will be obese.

Rather than blaming parents for childhood obesity, the researchers say these findings suggest that obesity prevention efforts should consider strategies to improve the mother-child bond and not focus exclusively on eating and exercise.

"It is possible that childhood obesity could be influenced by interventions that try to improve the emotional bonds between mothers and children rather than focusing only on children's food intake and activity," said Sarah Anderson, assistant professor of epidemiology at Ohio State University and lead author of the study.

"The sensitivity a mother displays in interacting with her child may be influenced by factors she can't necessarily control. Societally, we need to think about how we can support better-quality maternal-child relationships because that could have an impact on child health," she said.

The study appears online and is scheduled for publication in the January 2012 issue of the journal Pediatrics.

The researchers analyzed data from 977 participants in the Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development, a project of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. The sample in this national study included diverse families living in nine U.S. states whose children were born in 1991.

As part of that national study, trained observers assessed child attachment security and maternal sensitivity by documenting interactions between mothers and their children at three time points: when the children were 15, 24 and 36 months old.

In the maternal sensitivity assessment, mothers were instructed to play with their child while investigators rated several aspects of each mother's behavior, including supportiveness and respect for autonomy as well as signs of intrusiveness or hostility. Investigators rated attachment security of the children at age 15 and 36 months by monitoring a child's separation from and reunion with the mother. At 24 months, researchers assessed children's attachment security by observing mothers and children in their home.

Maternal sensitivity refers to a mother's ability to recognize her child's emotional state and respond with comfort, consistency and warmth. Psychologists describe securely attached children as those who rely on their parents as a "safe haven," which allows them to explore their environments freely, adapt easily to new people and be comforted in stressful situations. Toddlers who are insecurely attached tend to have experienced negative or unpredictable parenting, and may respond to stress with extreme anger, fear or anxiety, or avoid or refuse interactions with others.

Using these assessments of maternal sensitivity and child attachment security, Anderson and colleagues developed a maternal-child relationship quality score for their own statistical analysis. With a range of zero to six, the score served as an aggregate measure of a child's early relationship experience: Each point reflected a child's display of insecure attachment or a mother's ranking in the lowest quartile of sensitivity at one of the three assessment time points. The researchers designated a score equal to or greater than three as indicating a poor-quality emotional relationship.

The researchers calculated the body mass index (BMI) of the children using their heights and weights measured at or near age 15 years. BMIs were converted into percentiles for age and sex based on growth charts developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In accordance with current guidelines, children were considered obese if their BMI scores were at or above the 95th percentile on those charts.

A total of 241 children, or 24.7 percent, were classified as having a poor quality maternal-child relationship during early childhood based on a score of three or higher. The prevalence of obesity in adolescence was 26.1 percent among these children with the poorest early maternal-child relationships. The teen obesity prevalence was lower for children with better maternal relationships: 15.5 percent, 12.1 percent and 13 percent among those who had scores of two, one and zero, respectively.

Accounting for children's gender and birth weight ? two of several sociodemographic factors that also can influence the quality of the maternal-child relationship and risk for obesity ? children with the poorest quality early maternal-child relationship were almost 2 ? times as likely to be obese as adolescents than were children who had the best relationships with their mothers.

Anderson and colleagues suggest that this association between early childhood experiences and teen obesity has origins in the brain. The limbic system in the brain controls responses to stress as well as the sleep/wake cycle, hunger and thirst, and a variety of metabolic processes, mostly through the regulation of hormones.

"Sensitive parenting increases the likelihood that a child will have a secure pattern of attachment and develop a healthy response to stress," Anderson said. "A well-regulated stress response could in turn influence how well children sleep and whether they eat in response to emotional distress ? just two factors that affect the likelihood for obesity."

Obesity may be one manifestation of dysregulation in the functioning of the stress response system. Parents help children develop a healthy response to stress by protecting children from extreme levels of stress, responding supportively and consistently to normal levels of stress, and modeling behavioral responses to stress.

"The evidence here is supportive of the association between a poor-quality maternal-child relationship and an increased chance for adolescent obesity," Anderson said. "Interventions are effective in increasing maternal sensitivity and enhancing young children's ability to regulate their emotions, but the effect of these interventions on children's obesity risk is not known, and we think it would be worth investigating."

Canada offers Arctic option: relief wells, with some exceptions

Companies planning to explore Canada?s Arctic offshore region have been given a chance to show they can ?meet or exceed? the National Energy Board?s policy to kill an out-of-control well, otherwise the federal regulator will stick with its same-season relief policy.

In updating its rules, which included consideration of BP?s Macondo well blowout in the Gulf of Mexico, the NEB said in a 53-page report it remains determined to ?minimize harmful impacts? to the Arctic environment by requiring operators to sink a relief well in the same summer season that a well begins to leak uncontrollably.

But it has given companies a de facto exemption to demonstrate that they can apply new technologies to cap a blowout.

It is not yet clear whether that will open the way for Imperial Oil, ExxonMobil, BP and Chevron to file exploration applications in 2012 to explore their Beaufort Sea leases.

?Filing requirements set out the technical information we will need to see in future applications for offshore drilling in the Canadian Arctic,? said NEB chair Gaetan Caron.

?These new requirements provide clarity to future applicants and to those who will provide input into the board?s decision to approve or deny an application for a well in the Arctic.?

Chevron says not feasible

Imperial, as operator, and ExxonMobil each hold 25 percent of the Ajurak-Pokak joint-venture covering two deepwater exploration blocks in the Beaufort, with BP holding the remaining 50 percent. The partnership secured the rights by making combined work commitments of almost C$1.8 billion.

Chevron has two exploration licenses covering a total 1,200 square miles immediately west of the joint-venture properties and is hoping to start seismic work in the 2012-14 period.

In its submission to the NEB?s 18-month consultation with northern communities, the industry and environmentalists, Chevron said the same-season relief well requirement ?would likely not be feasible as drilling moves into deeper water areas, with more complex wells and with more challenging ice conditions than were experienced in the initial phase of Canadian Beaufort exploration 20 to 35 years ago.?

It said the NEB should require drillers to stop uncontrolled flows in the same season that they started, but not necessarily with a relief well.

Chevron has already indicated it is developing a new-generation blowout preventer which it believes would make relief wells unnecessary.

Imperial focused on prevention

James Hawkins, Imperial?s Arctic operations manager, said in a letter to the NEB that his company?s ?primary approach to well control is prevention.

?While it is important to have a relief well plan that has been subject to rigorous review and approval by the NEB, a requirement for same-season relief well capability is generally neither practical nor necessary,? he said.

But the leaseholders, along with ConocoPhillips, say they need more time to study what impact the new stipulations will have on their exploration plans.

However, the NEB does not rule out the use of enhanced prevention technology to avoid the same-season rule, although it said prevention alone will not suffice.

It said NEB panels will now determine whether companies can ?depart from? the relief well rule.

CAPP: Some flexibility

The Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers said the new rules offer some flexibility for companies to ?innovate and apply new technologies.?

In its submission, CAPP said 132 wells have been drilled in the Canadian Arctic, 89 in the Beaufort, with no significant oil spills.

Bharat Dixit, the NEB?s technical leader of exploration and production, told the National Post that the ice pack makes the Beaufort a ?closed ocean? for much of the year, which prompted the NEB to introduce its single-season relief well policy to prevent uncontrolled wells from leaking through the winter.

He said the NEB is confident drilling can be conducted safely in the Arctic provided companies follow recommendations on proper management and training, use a measured pace on development that includes ?pauses? before critical or dangerous work and have a proper spill response plan in place.

Trevor Taylor, policy director at the Pew Center?s Oceans North Canada group, said the NEB?s review is a ?positive first step,? although it is not clear ?what you need to do in order to drill in the Arctic.?

?The industry has been saying they can do it safely, so I think the ball is in industry?s court right now when it comes to demonstrating to regulatory bodies, the NEB in particular, that they?re able to meet requirements,? he said.

However, Taylor warned that ?there?s always going to be the risk? of a spill, adding: ?We?re not saying you shouldn?t drill at all. The risk has to be minimized to that extent that is reasonable.?

Turkey, Azerbaijan sign pipeline deal (AP)

ANKARA, Turkey ? Turkey and Azerbaijan on Monday signed an agreement to establish a consortium that would build a pipeline to transport 16 billion cubic meters (565 billion cubic feet) per year of Azeri gas to Turkey and Europe.

The two countries' energy ministers signed a memorandum of understanding for a consortium between Azerbaijan's state energy company SOCAR, Turkey's state-run pipeline company BOTAS, and the Turkish petroleum company TPAO. The deal allows other oil and gas companies to join the consortium.

The projected pipeline, the Trans Anadolu, would carry gas from Azerbaijan's Shah Deniz II field, across Turkey.

The deal comes at a time when officials are dithering over plans for the construction of the European Union-backed Nabucco pipeline project aimed at reducing the bloc's deliveries from Russia. The project is slated to ship gas from the Caspian region through southern Europe to Austria, but its viability has been called into question amid doubts that enough suppliers can be found to fill the pipeline.

Turkey's Energy Minister Taner Yildiz said the Trans Anadolu could eventually be connected to Nabucco.

Azerbaijan's Industry and Energy Minister Natiq Aliev said the Trans Anadolu pipeline would initially carry 16 billion cubic meters (565 billion cubic feet) per year of gas but the capacity could, in time, increase to 24 billion cubic meters (847 billion cubic feet) per year.

Six billion cubic meters (212 billion cubic feet) of the gas would be sold to Turkey while some 10 billion cubic meters (353 billion cubic feet) would go to European markets, Aliev said.

SOCAR has an 80 percent stake in the Trans Anadolu consortium, while the Turkish companies share 20 percent, Yildiz said.

Officials said construction is scheduled to begin in 2012 and end in 2017.

The pipeline's route and cost would be announced after a feasibility study by SOCAR, Yildiz told reporters.

Blake Griffin Dunks Against Warriors (VIDEO)

Prize acquisition Chris Paul scored 20 points and nine assists while Blake Griffin added 22 points and seven rebounds as the L.A. Clippers beat the Golden State Warriors 105-86.

Monta Ellis, who was probably happy to be making news for balling instead of texting graphic photos of a Warriors employee, had 15 points and eight assists for G.S.

It was not a spectacular opener for CP3 and Blake, but at least they won, unlike the other L.A. team, the Lakers, who were undone by Derrick Rose's game winner.

The Clippers are expected to be a playoff contender for the first time in an eternity, and here's a big reason why. Watch a nice highlight of Griffin throwing it down:

(AP) ? Big changes are coming for the football programs at Missouri and North Carolina. Before they happen, there's one more football game to play.

The Tigers and Tar Heels meet on Monday in the Independence Bowl, and both teams have become quite experienced at juggling questions about their long-term future with the upcoming matchup. Players and coaches are adamant the focus will be squarely on the field.

"We're expecting to play our best game," Missouri coach Gary Pinkel said. "And we expect North Carolina to play their best game."

Not that there aren't reasons to be distracted. North Carolina (7-5) is in the midst of a coaching change, while Missouri (7-5) is preparing for its move to the Southeastern Conference after an acrimonious exit from the Big 12.

The Tar Heels endured more than their share of turmoil this season under interim head coach Everett Withers, who took over in July after Butch Davis was fired shortly before preseason camp in the shadow of an NCAA investigation.

Withers was a candidate for the full-time job until last week, when North Carolina announced the hiring of Southern Mississippi coach Larry Fedora. Fedora takes over the program immediately after the bowl game and Withers is headed to Ohio State, where he'll be the defensive coordinator for new coach Urban Meyer.

Withers' time is already divided. He said he spent part of his week making recruiting calls for the Buckeyes before turning his focus back to North Carolina.

He expects his team to handle any extra adversity without issues. The Tar Heels have certainly had plenty of practice.

"This has been an experience for all of us," Withers said. "Each player has done an unbelievable job of holding this together to have the success that we've had the past two years. It's been remarkable. I haven't looked at it as tumultuous. I've looked at it as a life lesson ? a journey ? that you go through."

Coaching stability isn't a problem at Missouri (7-5), where Pinkel is wrapping up his 11th season with a program-record seventh consecutive bowl appearance. Instead, it's the move to the SEC that's the constant topic of conversation.

"There's no question about it ? this is historically a big moment with us playing our last game in the Big 12," Pinkel said. "That's kind of on my shoulders and on our players' shoulders. This game is important for many reasons, but it will be remembered specifically for that reason."

While North Carolina and Missouri share a penchant for off-field issues, they also have similar on-field resumes.

Both are talented teams that have experienced bouts of success and failure. Missouri started the season with a 4-5 record before consecutive wins over Texas, Texas Tech and Kansas earned them the right to go to the Independence Bowl.

Missouri sophomore quarterback James Franklin has thrown for 2,733 yards and 20 touchdowns this season while also rushing for 839 yards and 13 touchdowns. The Tigers' defense has given up just 14 points per game during the recent three-game winning streak.

"It's been kind of an up-and-down year for us, so it'd be nice to end with four (wins) in a row and end our time in the Big 12 the way we want to," receiver T.J. Moe said. "And for the guys who are going to be here next season, it can be a springboard into the SEC."

North Carolina started the season 5-1, but stumbled down the stretch, losing four of the last six to finish with a 3-5 ACC record.

Still, the Tar Heels won their regular-season finale against Duke and have one of the best freshmen running backs in the country in Giovani Bernard.

The 5-foot-10, 205-pounder from Davie, Fla., rebounded from a torn knee ligament last season to become the program's first 1,000-yard rusher since 1997.

"You see the great running backs, and they're with the great teams," Bernard said. "That's the main thing. Dwight Jones has done a great job catching the ball all year and our offensive line has protected me and Bryn (Renner) amazingly this year. The credit goes out to those guys. I'm following the blocks. A little patience helps."

Renner, a sophomore, led the ACC in passing efficiency and has thrown for 2,769 yards, 23 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

Renner said all of the team's adversity has taken a toll, but also made the Tar Heels resilient. Though disappointed Withers won't be around next season to coach the team, he said the Tar Heels are determined to send everyone out a winner.

"This coaching staff ? you can't say enough about the job coach Withers did for us all season," Renner said. "That's really who we're playing for. This staff and this team."

ROCHESTER, Minn. -- The editors of the journal Science have selected a Mayo Clinic discovery as one of their top 10 "groundbreaking scientific achievements of 2011." The Mayo study --the first to eliminate the effects of aging in mice -- received worldwide attention when it was published in Nature in November. Science's international list of achievements featuring scientific breakthroughs ranging from biology to aerospace research was released Thursday afternoon.

The study showed that the onset of age-related disorders and disabilities could be delayed or prevented by eliminating senescent cells: cells that have become "deadbeat" and are no longer dividing.

"This is indeed an honor, coming from Science in particular," says Jan van Deursen, Ph.D., a Mayo Clinic molecular biologist and senior author of the study. "We're pleased for this recognition for our team and collaborators, including the Mayo Clinic Robert and Arlene Kogod Center on Aging."

The Science editors expressed enthusiasm that "mice whose bodies were cleared of these loitering cells didn't live longer than their untreated cage-mates -- but they did seem to live better, which provided researchers with some hope that banishing senescent cells might also prolong our golden years."

"Our discovery demonstrates that, in our body, cells are accumulating that cause these age-related disorders and discomforts," says Dr. van Deursen, the Vita Valley Professor of Cellular Senescence at Mayo Clinic. "Therapeutic interventions to get rid of senescent cells or block their effects may represent an avenue to make us feel more vital, healthier, and allow us to stay independent for a much longer time."

The research is an important step in the quest to improve health-span -- not necessarily living a longer life, but a healthier, more productive one.

Adam Lambert Tweets Embarrassment, Regret Over Arrest

Adam Lambert has added to his initial, post-arrest statement.

Soon after he and boyfriend Sauli Koskinen got into a drunken brawl in Finland, and were subsequently booked for assault, Lambert Tweeted a half-serious response about how alcohol and jet lag resulted in the incident.

But the ex-American Idol finalist included another message last night, apparently displeased with both his tone in the initial response, and the false reports that circulated in the wake of the publicized arrest.

"Violence is not to be taken lightly," Adam wrote. "Embarrassed by drunkenness. No punches thrown, no injuries and no charges. Media always exaggerates."

Hey, we're just glad everyone is okay. And, yes, Lambert should be embarrassed by the fight. But live, learn and drink less after a long flight. What else can you do?

NASA shuts down space shuttle Discovery for final time

NASA powered down the space shuttle Discovery for a final time Friday (Dec. 16), more than 28 years after the agency's retired fleet leader first came alive. The vehicle was "unplugged" inside Orbiter Processing Facility-1 (OPF-1) at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

The electrical shutdown, which came soon after technicians closed the shuttle's twin 60-foot (18.3-meter) long payload bay doors, was a?milestone in Discovery's transition?from a space-worthy orbiter to a museum exhibit. The shuttle, the oldest of NASA's remaining orbiters, is destined for display next spring at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Virginia.

Discovery's cargo hold ? which carried to orbit the Hubble Space Telescope and Ulysses solar probe along with modules for the International Space Station and more than a dozen satellites ? was closed for what may be its last time. The?Smithsonian plans to display the shuttle?with its bay doors shut, at least initially.

The power down was much more permanent. Though Discovery's three electricity-generating fuel cells were reinstalled last week, they were first drained of all their reactants, and their feed lines were purged. Other than serving as an engineering example for researchers, they will never work again.

As a result, the shuttle's glass cockpit with its multiple computer screens and its backlit switches will from now on be dark. [Photos: See Inside Space Shuttle Discovery]

Since landing back on Earth after its 39th and final mission in March, Discovery has been carefully taken apart to preserve some of its components for future use while making the vehicle safe for public display. Its engines have been removed and replaced with replicas and its thrusters cleaned of their hazardous materials.

Inside its crew cabin, Discovery's waste collection system ? otherwise known as its toilet ? was removed, cleaned, and replaced, and its flight deck configured to appear ready for another mission, one that will never come. As with the fuel cells, the Smithsonian requested NASA keep Discovery as complete as possible so as to serve as a resource for future study.

Discovery is targeted to make one last flight in April 2012, though not under its own power and well within the atmosphere. Quotes on the death of Vaclav Havel (AP)

Reactions to the death of Vaclav Havel, who led Czechoslovakia's 1989 anti-communist "Velvet Revolution":

? "A great fighter for the freedom of nations and for democracy has died . . . His outstanding voice of wisdom will be missed in Europe, which is going through a serious crisis. I am praying for the peace of his soul" ? Solidarity founder and Poland's former president Lech Walesa.

? "His peaceful resistance shook the foundations of an empire, exposed the emptiness of a repressive ideology, and proved that moral leadership is more powerful than any weapon. ... He also embodied the aspirations of half a continent that had been cut off by the Iron Curtain, and helped unleash tides of history that led to a united and democratic Europe." ? President Barack Obama.

? "His dedication to freedom and democracy is as unforgotten as his great humanity . . . We Germans also have much to thank him for." ? German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who grew up in East Germany and went into politics as communism crumbled.

? "No one of my generation will ever forget those powerful scenes from Wenceslas Square two decades ago. Havel led the Czech people out of tyranny. And he helped bring freedom and democracy to our entire continent. Europe owes Vaclav Havel a profound debt. Today his voice has fallen silent. But his example and the cause to which he devoted his life will live on" ? British Prime Minister David Cameron.

? "The most subversive act of the playwright from Prague was telling the truth about tyranny. And when that truth finally triumphed, the people elected this dignified, charming, humble, determined man to lead their country. Unintimidated by threats, unchanged by political power, Vaclav Havel suffered much in the cause of freedom and became one of its greatest heroes." ? President George W. Bush.

_"Amid the turbulence of modern Europe, his voice was the most consistent and compelling ? endlessly searching for the best in himself and in each of us." ? Former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine K. Albright.

"Havel was a brave and powerful voice against totalitarianism and an inspiration for dissidents everywhere struggling for freedom." ? Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

? "He was a true European and has been a champion of democracy and liberty throughout his life . .. He was also a source of great inspiration to all those who fight for freedom and democracy around the world. The man has died but the legacy of his poems, plays and above all his ideas and personal example will remain alive for many generations to come." ? Jose Manuel Barroso, European Commission president.

? "With the death of Vaclav Havel, the Czech republic has lost one of its great patriots, France has lost a friend, and Europe has lost one of its wise men." ? French President Nicolas Sarkozy.

? "Vaclav Havel is the figure that represents the Velvet Revolution and the reunification of Europe. He will be sorely missed." ? Jerzy Buzek, president of European parliament and a former Polish prime minister and activist in Solidarity.

"Barbara and I join in mourning the death of Vaclav Havel, a gentle soul whose fierce devotion to the rights of man helped his countrymen cast aside the chains of tyranny and claim their rightful place among the free nations of world," said former U.S. President George H. W. Bush. "His personal courage throughout that twilight struggle inspired millions around the world, including those of us who worked with him during a historic period of transformation for Europe."

"Vaclav Havel believed in freedom, and had the courage to speak out about the evils of communism," said Nancy Reagan, widow of ex-U.S. President Ronald Reagan. "He will be remembered as a hero to the people of the Czech Republic and to lovers of freedom around the world."

Hugh Hefner Talks Spicing Up Lindsay Lohan's Playboy Reshoot (omg!)

Access Hollywood's Shaun Robinson and Playboy's Hugh Hefner, December 15, 2011 -- Access Hollywood

Lindsay Lohan's Playboy issue hit newsstands today and Access Hollywood's Shaun Robinson caught up with Hugh Hefner to get the details on the actress' Marilyn Monroe-inspired shoot. Hef says the tribute was a last-minute choice after he was disappointed with what the photographer first shot with Lindsay.

"I saw the results of the first day of shooting and it was not what I was looking for," Hef told Shaun in an interview at the Playboy Mansion on Thursday. "[Lindsay] hadn't bared it all in the first one and she looked like she had just come out of rehab... She looked like she just got up in the morning.

PLAY IT NOW: Why Is Hugh Hefner ?Concerned? For Ex-Fiance Crystal Harris?

"I wanted her to do something that would be truly unforgettable," he added.

Inside the pages of Playboy, Lilo's poses are nearly identical to those of Marilyn's iconic 1953 spread in the men's mag. While Lindsay was on board for the reshoot, her handlers -- at first -- were not, because this time she would be fully nude.

"They wanted a little more clothing and I said, 'You know, this is going to be what it's going to be, because we're doing a tribute here to the original nudes,'" Hef explained.

"Marilyn Monroe's comment after the original shoot was, when they asked what she was wearing, [she] said, 'All I had on was the radio.' All Lindsay Lohan had on during this was the radio!"

When asked if the actress arrived to the photo shoot on time, the Playboy magnate wasn't able to provide an answer, but said if she was truly channeling Marilyn, punctuality would not be one of her strongest points.

"I don't know the answer to that, [but] if she's doing a tribute to Marilyn Monroe, I assume that means she probably didn't show up on time because Marilyn didn't show up on time," he told Shaun.

"Marilyn was late also?" Shaun asked.

"Oh yes, with regularity," Hef answered.

Despite the unauthorized, premature release of Lindsay's pictorial, Hef still has high hopes for the issue.

"I think you can count on it," he told Shaun, when asked if he believes Lindsay's issue will be a bestseller. "The publicity surrounding it and the anticipation is remarkable."

Dr. Phil McGraw: Vasectomy Was 'Biggest Mistake I Ever Made' (VIDEO)

Early on in his marriage, Dr. Phil McGraw did something he regretted: he got a vasectomy.

In an essay for Newsweek, he said that his wife had gotten pregnant four years into their marriage. He was a young doctor with a new practice, and they negotiated. He only wanted the one child, and got a vasectomy shortly thereafter. He said, "That vasectomy was the biggest mistake I ever made. I was 29."

Six years later, he was at an event with his wife when he overheard her say that agreeing to have just one child was the biggest regret of her life. It was enough to have him get the procedure reversed the very next day. His wife was ecstatic, and she was pregnant with their second child Jordan thirty days later.

"God, if I had missed that?how dumb," Dr. Phil wrote. "I just shudder at how stupid I was. I learned you don?t make life decisions on the spur of the moment, and you don?t make them alone. I got a do-over on the biggest mistake of my life, and I am delighted that I did."

He has discussed his experience on his show before.

Parents: Choking game, not suicide, killed 10-year-old

Police believe the tragic death of a 10-year-old Milwaukee boy was suicide, but the boy's heartbroken parents say it may have been due to a choking game. TMJ4's Nick Montes reports.

?

By msnbc.com staff and NBC station TMJ4

MILWAUKEE -- Police believe the tragic death of a 10-year-old boy?was suicide, but his?parents think?it may have been due to a game that went terribly wrong.

"It wasn't a suicide, because he was just too happy and he had no reason to commit suicide," Enzy Curtis says of his son, Thalian.

Curtis believes the boy's death was a tragic accident.

"I think it was just a game he was playing and it got out of hand of just him by himself," Curtis says.

Thailan's parents say he's played the choking game before, and they warned him. "I told him, 'Honey that's dangerous. You shouldn't do that,'" Yolanda Cash, the boy's mom,?says.

The choking game, also known as the fainting game, involves cutting off the supply of oxygen to the brain in order to induce a high.

Cash is?trying to make sense of why her son Thailan was taken so suddenly.

"Why my baby? He was only 10," Cash says. "I'm just hurt. I'm just angry with God."

Cash says Thailan's older brother found him in the upstairs living room Saturday night.

"He said, 'There's something around his neck and there's blood.'I said, 'Huh?' He said, 'There's blood,?? she says.

Cash quickly ran upstairs only to find Thailan slumped over with a curtain around his neck.

Full story: Questions remain in death of young Milwaukee boy

"I tried pulling it from around his neck. But, it was just, I couldn't pull it. I had to shake the whole curtain down," she says. The image is stuck in her mind.?"Blood coming from his mouth and he was foaming, vomiting but he never came to,? Cash says while crying.

Milwaukee police told TMJ4 early Sunday morning the 10-year-old committed suicide.

Thailan's parents say he always lived in the moment. He loved going to school at Hope Christian School Prima, and asked questions about God. They do find some peace in that thought, but still wants answers.

"I still want to know why. I still want to know exactly what happened," Cash says.
